laurie drabbleProgram Leader: Laurie Drabble

Laurie Drabble has been a professor in the School of Social Work since 2001. Among other projects, Laurie coordinates an Institute for Community Partnered Research, where she organizes teams of students to work in partnership with local agencies to help improve services and document the value of their work. She also has over 30 years of experience in non-profit and community organizations, with a major interest in women's health, LGBT health, and strength-based approaches to working with individuals and communities. She has a special interest in how organizations and grass-roots groups can be effective in making real and lasting changes to improve the health and well-being of marginalized communities. Laurie loves to travel, and after working as part of a team on a 3-year project to help develop social work education in Vietnam, she has become enamored of the Southeast Asia and Oceania regions. She is passionate about teaching and continuing to learn about different approaches to addressing social problems and advancing social justice from around the world.

victor thompsonProgram Leader: Victor Thompson

Victor Thompson is a new professor at San Jose State University in the Department of Justice Studies. Prior to coming to SJSU, he was the Director and Chair of the Department of Sociology and Criminology at Rider University in Lawrenceville, NJ. Much of his scholarship is on the intersection of race and crime but for the last 10 years he has worked on a project with a colleague in New Zealand that looks at the different ways race, ethnicity and other cultural characteristics are captured on the national census for every country in the world over the last 40 years. During this time, Victor has taken many visits to New Zealand and has worked on several research projects specifically about ethnic identity in the New Zealand context. Though he does not claim to be an expert on New Zealand, he is fond of New Zealand and looks forward to sharing his adventures abroad with others. His dream is to spend summers in Hamilton, NZ selling smoked ribs and brisket from a mobile smoker and is secretly using this faculty led trip to set up his business plan. P.S. Don't tell anyone!
