Kayla Harper-Alvarez is currently a 3rd year Psychology Major with a Minor in Philosophy and Applied Computing for Behavioral and Social Sciences. She is involved in various aspects of campus as Vice President for Sigma Omega Phi Multicultural Sorority Inc. and a Leadership Today Assistant for the Mosaic Cross-Cultural Center.

Kristen Flaten is a 5th year accounting student with a minor in women, gender, and sexuality studies. She a member of The Global Awakening Club and is the president of the V-Day @ SJSU club, serving as the logistics director of the 2018 production of The Vagina Monologues by Eve Ensler. If you ever hear a laugh echoing throughout the student is Kristen.

Marlysha Nicolaides is a 3rd year Sociology Major with a Concentration in Community Change and a Minor in Photography. She is a mentor for Peers in Pride and involved with justCARE. When she’s at home she loves to spend time with her lovely kitten Jet!

Jenny’s passion for public health education started at San Jose State University where she completed her BS in Public Health. She was involved in campus life as an active member of Alpha Phi Omega, a community service based organization, volunteered and led teams for Peer Health Education (PHE), and interned for the Gender Equity Center in her senior year. During her time as a student and a health educator for Planned Parenthood Mar Monte she organized and collaborated on programming to address: violence prevention, risk reduction, body image, sexuality, gender, and identity. As a health educator for Planned Parenthood she taught comprehensive sex education in a variety of settings in English and Vietnamese, to: middle schools, high schools, foster youth, community centers, homeless shelters, Juvenile Hall, transitional homes, etc. Ultimately her path has led her back to SJSU to continue educating and giving back to the the community that gave her so much. As an Alum of SJSU, she enjoys talking to students about their path and how the Gender Equity Center can play a role in their success as a student, and a future community leader.

Bonnie Sugiyama

Bonnie Sugiyama is the director of the San Jose State University PRIDE Center and Gender Equity Center. They have worked on social justice issues as a student and a professional at several CSU campuses for 20 years, including: the advocating and founding of the PRIDE Center at Sacramento State; the re-visioning of Sonoma State University’s Center for Culture, Gender and Sexuality (now known as the HUB); and the founding director of the PRIDE Center at San Jose State University.  

Bonnie also serves as the Vice President of the Board of Directors for Adolescent Counseling Services (ACS), the parent organization of Outlet, an LGBTQ youth organization; and is a board member of the Bay Area Municipal Elections Committee (BAYMEC), an LGBTQ political action committee.  They also served on the national board of the Consortium of Higher Education LGBT Resource Professionals as the People of Color Co-Chair. 

Bonnie holds a BS in Management Information Systems and a MA in Educational Technology from California State University, Sacramento.
