Building Your Base: 
How to Increase Membership in Your Organization

 Discover the strategies community organizers use to outreach and build their membership. In this workshop, we’ll discuss developing your organization’s “message” to increase positive public attention, and we’ll learn the tips and tricks to recruiting that improve upon skills you already have. Quotas, quarter-sheets and classroom raps? Learn how to make these tools work for you!

 Adrienne Hypolite, Transitions Programs Coordinator - Student Involvement

Adrienne currently works as the Transition Programs Coordinator for the Student Involvement office, developing the Frosh Orientation programs. Prior to coming to San Jose State, Adrienne spent time working as a community organizer on a variety of educational and political campaigns. She received her B.A. in Community Studies with an emphasis on Youth and Schooling Inequalities from UCSC, and an M.A. in Education from San Jose State.

Inclusive Leadership:
Understanding Intersections of Identity

This interactive workshop will focus on aspects of identity and how each of our identities intersect in a particular way to create our own unique perspectives. Participants will explore how their identities affects the decisions they make, and develop skills to be more inclusive in their leadership.

Caz Salamana is the Assistant Director of the MOSAIC Cross Cultural Center at SJSU. He has coordinated campus-wide diversity and social justice programs, such as Tunnel of Oppression and the Hip Hop 4 Change Conference 2012.

Working Effectively in Groups: An Interactive Workshop

Working in a group is essential for success, no matter who you are! This workshop will briefly cover research conducted and we will then work as a group to establish best practices for teamwork.

Katherine Casey, Engineering Pathways to Success Coordinator, College of Engineering - SJSU

Katherine Casey is an SJSU alum who now works in the College of Engineering Dean's Office. As Engineering Pathways to Success Coordinator, her goal is to increase the diversity and preparedness of incoming Engineering students. Katherine currently supports 52 schools in the Bay Area who have implemented the Project Lead the Way Engineering Pathway at their middle and high schools. Katherine is also on the team of educators who host the EXcellence in your Engineering EDucation (EXCEED) Summer Bridge Program for incoming Engineering frosh. It is her hope that the future population of engineering professionals is demographically comparable to the larger population.

Join us for eight weeks of outstanding workshops focused on what it truly means to lead and how to be a good follower. Over the course of the series we will cover topics ranging from: inspiring action; coping with and leading through change; recruiting and growing an organization; transitioning officers and leadership; and how to leave a legacy. Each offering will be presented by SJSU faculty, staff, or alumni.

This is event is free and you are not required to attend all of the sessions - though those who do will be provided a certificate of completion and will be entered into a drawing for prizes.
