Adam Ahmed

Hometown: Porterville, CA

Campus Involvement: NRHH, Residential Advisor, Delta Sigma Phi

Favorite memory at SJSU: One of my fondest memories was when I received the call notifying me that I was selected to be an orientation leader. It was the day after Halloween and I had lost my voice. When I got the call, I was super nervous. When I was given the job, I couldnt contain my excitement. Since my voice was gone, it sounded super funny. My voice cracked a lot and i sounded like an old cat.

Best advise for a first-time freshman is... Best advice would be to get out of your comfort zone. College is a a fresh start. This gives you an opportunity to learn about yourself and your surroundings. You get out what you put in. I honestly feel as though the best moments in my college career have happened because I have constantly been pushing my comfort zone. Don't be afraid to do something different :)

My legacy is... I want to leave something that others can learn and grow from. I came from a small town that not many people know of, but yet I've been able to accomplish so much. I want to demonstrate to my peers that you don't have to be anybody amazing or famous to make a difference. I want to motivate them to get involved and try and make a difference.

Best advise for a first-time freshman is... First, make sure you are trying new things. Putting yourself out there is one of the first steps to enjoying and succeeding in college. My biggest piece of advice would be to learn how to mange you time.

Best advise for a first-time freshman is... My advice for a first time freshman is, don't be afraid to ask questions or ask for help! Favorite memory at SJSU: My favorite memory, SO FAR, has been everything that comes with living on campus. This means, late night food runs, spending hours in different rooms, and of course, staying up all night to have freestyle sessions! It's sharing these experiences with people that have become family to you, that make it that much more memorable.

Best advise for a first-time freshman is... the faster that you get uncomfortable, is the faster you'll truly begin to experience what SJSU has to offer.

My legacy is... still a work in progress. There are many things that I hope to accomplish that I have yet to work on.

 Diana Garcia Valencia

Favorite memory at SJSU: Favorite memory at SJSU was Leadership Today. Leadership Today taught me to be a better person and be more comfortable in my own skin. I have learn to not judge a book by a cover and to take time to connect with others that might be completely different from me. Diversity is a beautiful thing and its right here in campus. Take the time to explore your identity and understand others.. Diversity is a beautiful thing and its right here in campus!

Best advise for a first-time freshman is... Ask questions! There is so many resources for students that can make a huge impact on our education. Take advantage of all the resources SJSU has to offer. You will not regret it.

My legacy is... persistently working towards my goals and always aspiring to be a better person.

Hometown: Los Angeles, California

Campus Involvement: Resident Hall Association, Delta Sigma Phi Fraternity, College Day Family and Community Conference, Intramural Sports

Favorite memory at SJSU: So far its pledging Delta Sigma Phi and living in the Bricks. I have two new huge families that I can go to for anything and know they will support me. I couldn't have asked for a better college experience so far. Pledging has taught me so much about growing into maturity and handling the responsibility of being a student leader. My life in the bricks has taught me so much about people and how to not judge a book by its cover.

Best advise for a first-time freshman is... Learn time management early, get involved, try not be shy, and get to know your professors. But most importantly have fun and make good choices because these four years may potentially be the best years of your life.

My legacy is... In the works. It has begun and I'm adding things to it to kick start my legacy. I'm a member of RHA, a soon to be initiate of Delta Sigma Phi, an official orientation leader, and an active member within the community. In the near future I want to be an RA, a member of Men Creating Change, AS, and also the Black Student Union. My legacy is just getting started and the future is a blank canvas waiting to be painted.

Best advise for a first-time freshman is... Try at least one new thing your first year at SJSU- whether it is getting a job on campus, joining a club, or going Greek. You'll never know if you like something or not unless you step outside your comfort zone and give it a try!

Campus Involvement: Alpha Phi Sorority, Coaching Corps

Favorite memory at SJSU: Meeting my roommates freshman year, we hit it off on move-in day and still live together, they are without a doubt the best friends I ever made!

Best advise for a first-time freshman is...Indulge yourself in every opportunity you can. You will never know how amazing something is until you get out of your comfort zone and see what else is out there. College is all about new experiences and becoming open minded, which will only happen if you are willing to get involved and meet new people.

My legacy is... knowing that every student will go home saying, I am so glad I chose SJSU. This should be their home, no matter if it was their first choice school or their last, they should leave orientation anticipating the start of the school year to begin their new chapter. Every smile that leaves from orientation will forever be imbedded in my mind and I hope mine will stick with them to remind them that they already have one friend at SJSU who isn't going anywhere.

 Jamie Ascanio

Class Standing: Sophomore

Major: Pre-Nursing

Hometown: Fremont, Ca

Campus Involvement: San Jose State Cheerleading, CRU Club

Favorite memory at SJSU: My very first football game right before the football players came down the ramp, I was extremely excited. I was on the football field waiting for the players to pass by so I could tumble down the rest of the field. Watching them come down the ramp and seeing all the fans in the stadium was unreal. That's when it finally hit me that I was a cheerleader. All the hard work I put in throughout the years was finally going to be paid off.

Best advise for a first-time freshman is... Just relax. Coming into college is scary,I understand. I was terrified coming into college; I don't like change and coming here was a huge change. But, even though coming to college is a huge change, I promise you it'll be the best four years of your life. So, don't be scared to come here, get excited! It's your first chance of being on your own and making your own decisions. You're ready for it.

My legacy is... I want people to remember me by my pure happiness and positive energy that I bring with me everywhere I go. I can always make someone laugh or smile just by being around them. So no matter how I was feeling or what was going on in my life, I always had a smile on my face with positive energy radiating out from me.

My legacy is... "Do what you can to reach your full potential."
No one knows you better than you do. Know your weaknesses and know you strengths, then develop a plan to become the best person that you know you can be. Truly strive to discover what it is that drives you in life, and try to focus on personal growth. There's always room for improvement!

 Jhonatan Mendoza

Class Standing: Sophomore

Major: Business Marketing (Business)

Hometown: Oakland, California

Campus Involvement: Student Lead at the SJSU Dining Commons, Delta Sigma Phi Fraternity, Community Service at MLK Library

Favorite memory at SJSU: Moving into my apartment coming into my second year at SJSU was my favorite memory because of how fun it was. I love everyone that I live with and I wouldn't want it any other way. It felt so surreal finally having our own place off campus. It was everything that I had hoped it would be, and I am glad that I am living here with them.

Best advise for a first-time freshman is... My best advise would be to breathe and relax. Being calm makes things a lot more clearer, and it allows you to think more rationally. Another tip would be to have some sort of calender or a way to write down deadlines and in order to make sure that you stay on top of everything and not fall behind. We all come to college for an education, nobody wants to fall behind!

My legacy is... Inspiring people! I want to inspire people in order for them to one day inspire someone else and so on and so forth. Inspiration is key to almost everything one is doing, and being able to provide that for someone is very important. If you are able to inspire one person, that one person can go on to inspire another person, or many other people. It causes a chain reaction of inspiration!

Favorite memory at SJSU: When the Dining Commons got Dole Whip/pineapple soft serve. It revolutionized all of my meals.

Best advise for a first-time freshman is... Don't be scared to "look dumb." Ask the questions you don't know the answers to even if everyone else does, and go all out at events even if everyone else doesn't. In the end, you only look dumb if you don't take advantage of those opportunities.

My legacy is... To show others that hard work is nothing without an open mind, charisma, and a smile on your face.

Best advise for a first-time freshman is... No one is going to tell you when to do your homework or when to go to class. You will have to make the decision yourself and choosing what your priorities are first and foremost.

My legacy is... to inspire and get these freshman super stoked to be a San Jose State Spartan, and to show that they all have potential!

 Monica Cordova

Class Standing: Freshmen

Major: Undeclared

Hometown: Fremont, CA

Campus Involvement: SJSU Women's Club Volleyball: President and Captain of the D2 team

Favorite memory at SJSU: My favorite memory at SJSU was when I first got swept in as a guest at the Dining Commons. I thought it was amazing! I got a burger, fries, a pizza, Jamba Juice, and a sandwich.. I ate so much and didn't regret a single bit of it! But that was definitely a one-time thing because now I understand where "Freshman 15" comes from...

Best advise for a first-time freshman is... Be open-minded. Be open to new things and especially change. College is an entirely new and different environment and you won't be able to grow if you stay inside your shell.

My legacy is... to be that down-to-earth girl who anyone can talk to, confide in, and share a laugh or two with!

 Nicole Mardesich

Best advise for a first-time freshman is... The transition from high school to college can be a little overwhelming, but do not be afraid to ask questions or try new things. Getting involved on campus is a great way to meet people, and can make going to school everyday a lot more enjoyable.

My legacy is... to live everyday like its your last, and to not forget to smile every step of the way. Do not worry about the past or the future, instead just focus on the present. Stay motivated, stay grateful, stay confident, and stay humble.

My legacy is... far from finished.

Ria Aguirre

Class Standing: Sophomore

Major: Industrial Design (Humanities and the Arts)

Hometown: Vallejo, CA

Favorite memory at SJSU: My most memorable hang out was when my friends and I watched Frozen together one night in my room. We sang along to all the songs, blasted Disney music after the movie ended, ate pizookies from the Village Market, and talked about anything that came to mind.

Best advise for a first-time freshman is... My advice to freshman is don't be afraid to branch out. Graduating seniors have probably heard from their friends, family, and teachers that college is the time to find yourself. College marks the beginning of the next chapter, a fresh start. Keeping an open mind and being willing to explore will help freshman get the most out of their year.

My legacy is... give back to the community that has given me the opportunity to learn and grow. I want to contribute my skills to help others in any way possible and spread positivity where ever I go.

 Ricky Salguero

Favorite memory at SJSU: Becoming part of the Orientation Team is, by far, my best memory. This program has developed into a thriving passion for not only student success but individual success.

My best advice for a first time freshman is… Stop caring about what other think. These are your years to find yourself, your true self. In the upcoming years, you will learn more about your core values than you have in your lifetime. Above all, enjoy yourself. How can you make others happy when you cannot even be happy for yourself?

My legacy is… Become the best we can be. One must stop and realize their plans can only take them so far, true accomplishment arrives through the power in believing in ourselves.

Favorite memory at SJSU: My favorite memory was my freshman orientation. I remember the fear yet excited feelings I had coming on the first day and the sad feelings on the second day that I would not be able to start earlier. My orientation leader really made my start at SJSU a great one, she really inspired me to great things. This was also a time when I was able to make a bunch of friends that I am still close to now. My frosh orientation helped me be inspired to start my own great memories here, and help others along the way.

Best advise for a first-time freshman is... My best advice for a first-time freshman is relax and have fun. We worry so much about what college will be like, and we stress ourselves out too much that we forget about fun. So take a second, take a breath, and relax. Enjoy all that SJSU has to offer to you throughout your time here. It is the best experience you will ever have, make it how you want to be.

My legacy is... My legacy is making a difference in other people's lives, my goal at the end of the day is to help others around me no matter who they may be. I want people to know that I was one person who cared more about the people around me, than myself. I always want to help to improve the world by helping others, and helping them learn and grow. So my legacy will be the impact that I strive to make on others' lives everyday.
