Student Leaders Wanted for Orientation 2016/17!

We are looking for Spartans who are team players and are eager to be visible campus leaders. Benefits include extensive leadership training and opportunities to make connections with over 200 faculty and staff; three units of academic credit for completing the leadership training course in the spring semester; and the ability to affect the lives of over 3000 new students and their parents and family members. 

Attend an Information Session: Learn More About the Position and Selection Process!

Information sessions are offered to give applicants unfamiliar with the Orientation Program a chance to learn more about the Orientation Leader position and prepare for the Orientation Leader Group Interview Workshop. At this time, applicants can interact with professional and student staff from the Orientation program to get questions answered and learn firsthand about the many enticing benefits that come with being an Orientation Leader.

We will provide attendees with information about the program, discuss the level of commitment and dedication required of an Orientation Leader, and give tips on positive ways for applicants to stand out and make a great first impression at the Group Interview Workshop.

This fall's informational sessions will be held in Student Involvement (Student Union 1400) during the following dates and times:

  • Thursday, September 22nd 4:30-5:30pm
  • Friday, September 23rd 12:30-1:30pm
  • Monday, September 26th 5:30-6:30pm

Application and Selection Process

All new applicants are required to complete the online application, have two professional references submit a reference form, and attend the Orientation Leader Selection Workshop, a large group interview in which applicants will be evaluated on a series of skills we look for in an Orientation Leader.  Selected applicants from the workshop will be invited to individual interviews.

Orientation Leader Group Interview Workshop: Friday, October 7 between 9am-6pm. A possibility of two workshop times may be offered depending on the pool of applicants and applicants will either participate in a morning or late afternoon session. All eligible applicants will receive an email with full details. 

Individual Interviews will be held: Monday, October 10 – Wednesday, October 12

Orientation Leader Commitments

One of the highest-rated components of our Orientation program is the interaction new students have with their Orientation Leaders. Our leaders go through an extensive, yet rewarding training process that helps prepare them for interactions with new students and their parents and family members. In addition to planning and facilitating orientation sessions, applicants should be prepared for the following major commitments:

UNVS 199 Class: Orientation Leadership Studies

In the Spring semester, all new Orientation Leaders are required to enroll in this3-unit, academic course. This class is designed to prepare undergraduate students who have been selected to serve as Orientation Leaders to be effective ambassadors and peer leaders at San José State University. Through lectures, videos, readings, papers, discussions, group projects, and participation in various university programs and events, students will learn the theoretical and practical aspects of student leadership. Students will also be provided training opportunities in university policies and procedures and other skill building areas pertinent to their role as Orientation Leaders. Developing a thorough working knowledge of the resources and services available to new students and their families will prepare students in the course to not only successfully orient and transition incoming students and their families, but also familiarize themselves with these same resources and services available to them as current students on campus.

Orientation Leader Staff Retreat

Our 3 day, 2 overnight staff retreat is typically held the first weekend of February and provides the first opportunity for all Orientation staff to come together and get to know one another, set expectations for their experience, and build a foundation for being a team for the following nine months and beyond.

Final Training

Final Training is two weeks and will take place between June and July, before the first Frosh Orientation session. Attending and being present at all components of Final Training is mandatory.

Frosh Orientation Program

All Orientation staff must be available for all Orientation sessions during the summer (specific session dates to be announced). This includes living in on-campus housing and being available from 5pm the night before each session through 5pm the second day of each session.
