 Do I need to attend Frosh Orientation?

Yes, if you are a first time freshman, all activities, including the overnight, are required. If you do not attend or leave during any portion, you will be blocked from class registration. We recommend attending an early session to have the best class availability!

 How do I sign up for Frosh Orientation?

Registration for Frosh Orientation is an online process through the Next Steps web site: nextsteps.sjsu.edu. You will need your Student ID Number (9 digits) and PIN (4 digit number that is the month/day of your birthday) in order to access the site.

 How do I navigate the Next Steps website?

Once at nextsteps.sjsu.edu, you must submit your Intent to Enroll. Next, enter your testing information in order to proceed to the Frosh Orientation registration page.

Next, follow these steps:

  • Select your preferred Frosh Orientation Session date (if it is not displayed in the drop-down menu, it is no longer available). We recommend attending an early session for best class availability
  • Click Submit (make sure to do this!)
  • Print two (2) copies of the Reservation. Keep one for your records and bring one with you to Orientation
  • Follow the link to the online Marketplace to pay your Frosh Orientation fee
  • Register your family members through the parent / guest link on the online Marketplace
  • Apply for on-campus housing, if required

 When will I receive a confirmation of my Frosh Orientation Session date?

Registration confirmation for students will be automatically generated and always available in your Next Steps account. family members will receive a payment email immediately as well as a program confirmation 1 week prior to their session. If you do not see this, please check your junk or spam folder.

 What happens at Frosh Orientation?

This mandatory two-day program shows you all that SJSU has to offer and will:

  • Teach you about SJSU traditions
  • Introduce you to the many resources available on the SJSU campus
  • Welcome you to your new community and home
  • Help you be confident about your ability to graduate

Trained Frosh Orientation Leaders will:

  • Walk you through the class registration process 
  • Guide you and your family through educational experiences about campus programs and services
  • Assist you in making the transition to college

Travel Planning: If you are traveling from out of the area, we recommend booking return flights after 3 or 4 PM on Day 2 of the program.

 Am I required to stay on campus during the entire Frosh Orientation program?

Yes, and you must stay with the program. All aspects of Frosh Orientation are mandatory. If you leave the program at any time, you will have a hold placed on your registration and you will not be allowed to register for classes. This applies to the overnight portion.

During the overnight portion of Frosh Orientation you will be assigned to a room with another Frosh Orientation student. You must stay in the room that has been assigned to you. You will stay in a room in gender-specific wings of the residence halls and will have access to semi-private restrooms with showers. Frosh Orientation student leaders and members of Frosh Orientation professional staff will be staying in the hall with you. The safety of all of our students is extremely important and requiring that your stay on campus helps us make sure everyone is accounted for.

 What do I need to bring to Frosh Orientation?

You should bring:

  • User ID and Password to log into MySJSU
    • 9-digit SJSU ID and 4-digit PIN to log into the Fee Payment websites
      If you do not have the User ID, Password, SJSU ID or PIN, please request them by emailing the CMS Help Desk at cmshelp@sjsu.edu by providing your Name, Date of Birth & Mailing Address.
  • Your Frosh Orientation Confirmation
  • A personal file of your SJSU admission information including admission letters, grade reports, copies of transcripts from other colleges, placement test scores, financial aid forms, and everything else related to your enrollment.
  • Comfortable clothes and shoes. Be prepared for walking outside and variable weather.
  • Change of clothes and toiletries as needed. This is a mandatory overnight program. You will be on campus for two days. Linens provided include: (1) pillow, (1) blanket, (1) set of sheets, (1) bath towel, and (1) wash cloth.

 I can't attend any of the Frosh Orientation session dates. Are there any other options?

No. There are numerous sessions throughout the summer that you can choose from. Frosh Orientation is mandatory for attendance at SJSU. We encourage you to register early and make summer travel plans around these dates.

 What does the Frosh Orientation fee pay for?

The $250 student fee pays for:

  • All programming costs
  • Parking for the program
  • Meals
  • Mandatory student lodging in the residence halls.

All students must attend the program; parents/guardians are highly encouraged to attend. To register and pay for Parent Orientation, click on the Parent/Guardian Orientation option available at the Parent Orientation Payment site. No portion of this fee is optional as students are required to participate in all aspects of the two day program. This fee is non-refundable.

 What happens at Parent/Guest Orientation?

This optional one day program exposes you (or your parent/guest) to all that SJSU has to offer and will:

  • Teach you about SJSU traditions
  • Introduce you to the many resources available on the SJSU campus
  • Welcome you and your student to his/her new community and home
  • Help you be confident about your ability to support your student during their college years

Knowledgeable faculty and staff will:

  • Guide you through educational experiences about campus programs and services
  • Provide you with an overview about classes, general education, and work load
  • Offer you many resources to aid you through your student's first year at SJSU
  • Assist you in preparing for the transitions you may encounter as a parent of a college student
  • Get you connected to other SJSU parents and receive tips from veteran college parents

Parents/guests are invited to stay through Day 1 of the program and can return on Day 2 to pick up their students. Parent/guests cannot attend the student-only sessions. Several specialized events have been planned throughout the day and will be most beneficial to parents/guests.

 What does the parent fee pay for?

The parent fee includes:

  • All programming costs
  • Parking for the program
  • Meals

No portion of this fee is optional. Lodging for parents is not included in this fee. Fees are non-refundable.

 What about lodging for parents/guardians?

Lodging for parents/guardians is not included in the Parent Orientation fee. You can choose to stay at a downtown hotel by contacting the San José Convention and Visitor's Bureau at 800-SAN-JOSE (726-5972).

 Can I bring a friend, sibling, or significant other with me to Frosh Orientation?

Please note that everyone who attends Frosh Orientation as a guest (parent/guardian, sibling, significant other, etc.) must pay the $80 fee. Parent/guardian sessions are planned specifically for their needs and space for guests is limited.
