The Leadership Academy is a unique program that takes San José State University students and provides them with practical skills to prepare them to become effective leaders in our vast global community. In today's society with diverse and team-oriented organizations, it is imperative for SJSU graduates to attain "soft skills" that will enable them to be successful on campus in their leadership roles and become marketable to future employers.
The Leadership Academy focuses on four core competencies and will gear all curriculums to attaining those specified skills. They are: Communication Skills, Ethical Leadership, Critical Thinking, and Interpersonal Skills.
The Leadership Academy covers 1.5 days of activities. On Day 1, students will engage in a 6 hour program facilitated by a range of departments across campus that includes representatives from Academic Affairs and Student Affairs. Curriculum includes activities that focus on valuable topics such as cross cultural competency, assertiveness training, ethical dilemmas, and problem solving case studies. In addition, the first day will feature a panel of professionals that have experience recruiting collegiates as potential employees. This panel will highlight skills and characteristics they look for in future employees and give tips to participants in self-marketing.
Day 2 will be held at a City Beach in Fremont, California. City Beach staff, in tandem with SJSU staff/faculty, will facilitate a day long experience of exploration of team dynamics and enacting of communication skills. The day will conclude with a high ropes course to illustrate the four desired core competencies.
25 SJSU undergraduate students will be selected to participate in the Leadership Academy that spans 1.5 days. Selected participants will have prior leadership experience at SJSU, either in the classroom setting or with co-curricular activities.
