Spartan Voices

Social work led to a long and productive career in child welfare. My career culminated in heading up a project that raised $14 million, and built the county a multi-service shelter that provided temporary care for abused and neglected children. Social work also led to a path of community arts activism and leadership.

The college’s four schools and seven departments provide students with a theoretical base developed and tested through research, knowledge that can be applied in diverse systems, processes that incorporate human understanding and cooperation, and supervised practice in a variety of career-related settings. We provide the skills and experiences that empower graduates to be exemplary members of a diverse and global community who work to improve the quality of life for present and future generations.

We are proud of recent accomplishments our commitment to excellence has enabled:

  • Yoshihiro Uchida Hall reopened after a year-long renovation, while upgrades to Spartan Complex are underway to complete the state-of-the art facilities for kinesiology, hospitality management, and health science and recreation.
  • Students, volunteers and faculty members have worked 32,000 hours to date to help 669 eligible people expunge their records via the Department of Justice Studies Records Clearance Project.

I am grateful to loyal supporters who have helped enable our successes. I encourage your involvement and investment in the future of our college and our students so that we can reach our goals to:

  • Enhance research opportunities and equipment, and upgrading laboratories used by students and faculty members.
  • Secure a $2 million gift to establish an endowed professorship in a critical interdisciplinary health program.

This is a great time to make a commitment and invest in what promises to be a dynamic and exciting tomorrow for our college and the university. Please make your gift to the College of Applied Sciences and Arts today!

Thank you,

Alice Hines, Interim Dean
