With the great education and practical work experience I’ve had at SJSU, as well as the help of the university’s Career Center, I was able to qualify for a summer internship program in an accounting firm. I am excited that I actually have a job with them waiting for me once I graduate!

As mom proudly watches me during commencement this month, we will both know that I am fulfilling dad’s dream of college for me. You see, my dad passed away when I was very young. I set the goal of college for myself and have now accomplished his dream and mine.

Hi, I’m Brittiny Terry—soon to be a proud graduate with a business degree from San Jose State University.  I’m writing to let you know how much gifts to the university from people like you have meant to students like me. I also want to ask you to please give to the SJSU Fund today because you still have a little time to make a difference in the lives of students like me before the school year ends.

Like many students at San Jose State, I am at this university because I know I want to make a good life for my family and myself.  I stay motivated because I want to help my mom so she can finally relax. I also have seen where not going to college or making poor choices can get a person, and I will not go down that path. I know what I need to do to reach my goals and will do whatever it takes.

Thanks to the support of SJSU’s alumni and friends, students like myself have access to critical tools that help them stay on track to graduate. The advising centers in various colleges within the university are some of these important tools. The Business Student Advisement Center has been an invaluable resource that helped me with academic planning and provided access to the computers and printers I needed to get my schoolwork done.

Gifts to the university also help our professors engage in scholarly pursuits that advance their fields and applied research that helps them develop into the excellent teachers.  They have encouraged and challenged me to always do my best work. Thanks to a tough but great accounting teacher, I can do debits and credits in my sleep!

Over the past year, the university’s alumni and friends have helped students like me succeed in their studies because their generosity has provided us with enriching programs and services such as:

  • Study abroad opportunities for students to immerse themselves in activities, cultures and research that transformed their lives in countries such as Mexico, Argentina, Switzerland, Haiti, China, Peru, Austria, England and Australia.
  • A powerful computer lab for the School of Music and Dance that integrates imagery and recording technology into digital musical compositions.
  • CommUniverCity San Jose, which continued its award-winning work building bridges between SJSU, the city of San Jose and local communities.
  • Grants to the university such as the National Science Foundation grant for the Engineering Leadership Scholars Pathway program that enabled more academically talented, financially challenged students to attend SJSU.
  • State-of-the-art whiteboard and other innovative technologies that help students become adept with the technology they will be using in their workplaces.

It seems surreal that I will be graduating this month. I met my goal to graduate in four years in order to keep my expenses manageable. Now that I am ready to begin life after college, it is a bit unnerving. I have to remind myself that I’m ready for the real world because of the excellent education I have received here at San Jose State.

Academic education wasn’t the only great experience I’ve had here at SJSU. I’ve worked for four years in the university’s Student Call Center, reaching out to alumni and friends to encourage gifts to the university. I was shy when I first started, but I learned that I really enjoy talking to people like you. I am no longer afraid to talk to people I don’t know, and I’ve developed my communication skills, which will help me for the rest of my life.

With the great education and practical work experience I’ve had at SJSU, as well as the help of the university’s Career Center, I was able to qualify for a summer internship program in an accounting firm. I am excited that I actually have a job with them waiting for me once I graduate!

It’s a scary world out there, but with your help, San Jose State students can face their futures with confidence. I am writing to urge you to give to the SJSU Fund today because your gift will help enrich the SJSU experience for students and prepare them for successful futures. Not only will you feel good knowing you have made a difference in many lives, you will also play a role in building a better future for our community by helping to provide an educated workforce.

Thank you,

Brittiny Terry ’11 (this month!!)

P.S. Please give today to the SJSU Fund before the school year ends. Nearly 30,000 students like me are counting on you!
