Spartan Voices

Social work led to a long and productive career in child welfare. My career culminated in heading up a project that raised $14 million, and built the county a multi-service shelter that provided temporary care for abused and neglected children. Social work also led to a path of community arts activism and leadership.

The college’s four schools and seven departments provide students with a theoretical base developed and tested through research, knowledge that can be applied in diverse systems, processes that incorporate human understanding and cooperation, and supervised practice in a variety of career-related settings. We provide the skills and experiences that empower graduates to be exemplary members of a diverse and global community who work to improve the quality of life for present and future generations.

We are proud of recent accomplishments our commitment to excellence has enabled:

  • Professors Colleen O'Leary-Kelley and Tamara McKinnon and SJSU students conducted a continuing education program in nursing last summer for students in Ireland.
  • Miranda Worthen, assistant professor in the Department of Health Science and Recreation, received the Early Career Investigator Award for 2016.
  • Ed Cohen, School of Social Work, completed his Fulbright Scholar activities in Vietnam teaching courses on mental health for undergraduate social work students at Dalat University.

I am grateful to loyal supporters who have helped enable our successes. I encourage your involvement and investment in the future of our college and our students so that we can reach our goals to:

  • Naming a professorship in the interdisciplinary health area.
  • Establishing global scholarships so that students may study abroad to gain an international experience in culture and social awareness.
  • Establishing a dedicated space for cutting-edge student engagement, collaborative faculty research projects and innovative community partnerships.

This is a great time to make a commitment and invest in what promises to be a dynamic and exciting tomorrow for our college and the university. Please make your gift to the College of Applied Sciences and Arts today!

Thank you,

Mary C. Schutten, Dean
