Who Can Apply

You may request UNDERGRADUATE Conditional Admission Eligibility if ...

  • you are a student who needs an F1-visa to study in the U.S.
  • you have graduated from a secondary or high school
  • you have completed high school studies with grades equal to a U.S. 3.0 GPA (out of 4.0), or above for freshman studies; OR, a minimum of 3.0 high school GPA and 2.0 university level coursework for transfer studies
  • you have completed at least three years of college preparatory mathematics
  • you have NOT achieved the required English language proficiency test score

You may request GRADUATE Conditional Eligibility if ...

  • you have graduated from an accredited four year academic college or university and earned a bachelor's degree
  • you have achieved minimum grades equal to a U.S. 2.5 GPA (out of 4.0), or above in your last 60 semester units of coursework. Note: Some majors may have higher GPA requirements
  • you have NOT achieved the required English language proficiency test score

NOTE: "Conditional" application only guarantees the eligibility to enter SJSU. It does not guarantee full admission to individual programs. All conditional applicants MUST pass the minimum TOEFL/IELTS score and satisfy all department requirements while studying at iGateways, submit their documents to admission office and/or graduate departments for full review before any admission decision can be made.

All “conditional” applicants must begin their studies at International Gateways first before submitting the online degree application to SJSU.

Conditional admission/eligibility applicants are not subject to the WES evaluation requirement. Applicants will only need to submit all documents as indicated below.


How to Apply: Step 1

Applicants seeking Conditional Admission/Eligibility to SJSU must submit all of the following documents in one packet:

  • A completed "Plan to Apply (pdf)" form
  • A cashiers check or money order for $110 USD payable to "San Jose State University"
  • Complete, original official transcripts and a copy of Diploma or Graduation Certificate with a complete English translation:

    Undergraduate Applicants

    1. Complete Secondary or High School transcripts indicating completion of three years of college preparatory mathematics
    2. Minimum 3.0 GPA
      Note: Transfer students must also have a minimum 2.0 GPA on university level coursework
    3. Copy of Diploma or Graduating Certificate.

    Students who have not yet graduated from high school MUST submit an Official Letter that clearly states the coursework they are currently enrolled in and their anticipated date of graduation.



    Graduate Studies Applicants

    1. Complete University transcripts
    2. Minimum 2.5 GPA for the last 60 academic units of study- Copy of Diploma or Graduating Certificate
    3. Completed "Document Submission Identification Form (pdf)"

    Students who have not yet graduated from college or university MUST submit their 7th semester grades AND an Official Letter that clearly states their anticipated date of graduation.

  • A copy of the "Biographic Page" of their passport
  • A completed Declaration of Finance form (pdf) and a bank letter indicating the minimum required funds for study -- in equivalent U.S. dollars

Only applications with ALL of the required documents will be reviewed for Conditional Admission.

How to Apply: Step 2

After you have been contacted by the International Gateways Admissions Office, you must complete your application for Conditional Admission by applying to the English language training program:

Do NOT send copies of your bank letter or your passport to the International Gateways Admissions Office . The Conditional Admission Unit will forward your copies of your documents to them.

IMPORTANT NOTE: For full admission to SJSU, after achieving the required English language test score:

  • ALL "Conditional Admission Eligibility" applicants must submit an official application through the CSUMentor website.
  • ALL "Conditional Eligibility" Graduate applicants must also satisfy all of the departmental requirements of their intended major before a final admission decision can be made.

Official Transcripts

Students applying for Undergraduate Admission to San Jose State University must submit transcripts to verify all completed coursework at a secondary or high school.

If you are still studying at a secondary or high school at the time you apply for admission you are required to submit the most current "Work In Progress" transcript. You must also submit your final transcript when you graduate.

To find which school documents are required, click on the letter group for your country and scroll down until you find your country. You will find an explanation of the exact documents required and how they must be submitted to the Admissions Office.

Please be sure to follow instructions listed for your country, or documents will be considered unofficial and will not be accepted.  


Declaration of Finance

All applicants must submit Declaration of Finance form (pdf) together with a Bank Letter showing the minimum required funds available for study in U.S. dollars.


If your funds come from your government or a private agency:

  1. you must complete and sign the Declaration of Finance (pdf)
  2. you must attach a verification letter on letterhead paper from your government or private agency indicating:
    • FIRST-TIME FRESHMEN: minimum of $29,715 USD
    • GRADUATES: minimum of  $28,749 USD


If your funds are from your parents of an individual sponsor:

  1. you must complete and sign the Declaration of Finance (pdf)
  2. you must  enter the required information regarding your parents or sponsor or provide a signed letter declaring his/her intent to sponsor you.
  3. you must attach a letter from your sponsor's bank indicating:
    • FIRST-TIME FRESHMEN: minimum of $29,715 USD
    • GRADUATES: minimum of  $28,749 USD


If your funds are in your personal bank account:

  1. you must complete and sign the Declaration of Finance (pdf)
  2. you must attach a letter from your bank indicating:
    • FIRST-TIME FRESHMEN: minimum of $29,715 USD
    • GRADUATES: minimum of  $28,749 USD

Application Deadlines

Before you apply for Conditional Admission Eligibility, please think carefully about the term you hope to begin your studies at San Jose State University. 

Then choose an International Gateways English language training program that begins at least six months before that term begins.

  • San Jose State University accepts applications only during the Fall and Spring application periods and admits students twice a year
  • International Gateways accepts applications everyday and admits students to their English language training programs at five different times a year -- see: Session Dates and Fees
