Academic Requirements 

The minimum GPA requirement for admission to Graduate Studies programs at San Jose State University is 2.5 in your last 60 semester units of study.

Many graduate programs have higher than minimum GPA requirements. 

Departments make the final decision regarding admission to their majors.

Professional development courses and courses taken in non-accredited institutions are not included in the GPA calculation.

How to Apply 

All students must apply to SJSU online through "CSU Mentor". This step must be completed regardless of any other requirements for your major.

Your Application Status 

After you have submitted your application, your must activate your MySJSU account to check your status.

NOTE: Your application will not be evaluated for admission to SJSU until ALL supporting documents have been received.

To activate your MySJSU account:

Required Documents

Document Submission Form 

You must use the Document Submission Identification Form (pdf) to submit your documents to the Graduate Admissions Office.

All official transcripts must be sealed and unopened in order to be accepted. Copies or Opened Transcripts WILL NOT Be Accepted.

All documents that have been submitted become the property of the San Jose State University and cannot be released to the student or anyone else.

English Requirement 

Students who have graduated from a college or university in a country where the primary language is not English must submit the required English language test score before they can be officially admitted to San Jose State University.

The English proficiency exam is waived only if you have received a B.A. or M.A. degree from an accredited U.S. institution OR you have completed 3 years of full-time study in a U.S. institution.

*Some programs require higher test scores, so please check the Departmental Website or the Test Requirements page.  

Applicants who have not met the English language proficiency requirement are strongly encouraged to apply to the Conditional Admission Eligibility program before applying to San Jose State University.

Official Transcripts 

Students applying for Graduate Studies to San Jose State University must submit transcripts to verify all completed coursework at a college or university.

If you are still studying at a college or university at the time you apply for admission you are required to submit the most current "Work In Progress" transcript. You must also submit your final transcript when you graduate.

Declaration of Finance 

All International Graduate applicants HAVE TO submit a Declaration of Finance form (pdf) and a Bank Verification letter showing a minimum of $28,810.00 U.S. in funds available for study. All letters verifying funds must be dated within the current year.

1. If your funds come from your government or a private agency:
   • you must complete and sign the Declaration of Finance (pdf)
   • you must attach a verification letter on letterhead paper from your  government or private agency indicating a minimum of $28,810.00 US in available funds
2. If your funds are from an individual sponsor:
   • you must complete and sign the Declaration of Finance (pdf)
     
   • you must enter the required information regarding your parents or sponsor or provide a signed letter declaring his/her intent to sponsor you.
   • you must attach a letter from your sponsor's bank indicating a minimum of $28,810.00 US in available funds
3. If your funds are from an individual sponsor:
   • you must complete and sign the Declaration of Finance (pdf)
   • you must attach a letter from your bank indicating a minimum of $28,810.00 US in available funds

Passport Copy 

A copy of the biographic page of your current passport is required. The name listed on your passport must be exactly the same name that will appear on your I-20 if you are offered admission. There are no exceptions to this rule.

Many graduate programs require that applicants to take an additional test or have a higher than minimum English language proficiency test score before they may be admitted to the program they have chosen.

Letters of Recommendation 

Some Graduate programs require letters of recommendation.

Find to your major's department website.Then check your major's website to find out whether letters of recommendation are required and where the letters must sent.

Only letters typed on agency or business letterhead paper and signed by an official will be accepted. A separate Right of Access to Letter of Recommendation Form (pdf)must accompany each letter of recommendation.

Health Insurance 

International students must have approved medical insurance before registering for classes each semester.

IMPORTANT NOTE: Most common "travel insurance" plans are not acceptable.

You will not be able to register for until you can show proof of adequate health insurance that includes coverage for accidental injury, sickness, medical evacuation, and repatriation.
