Academic Requirements 

The minimum GPA requirement for admission to Graduate Studies programs at San Jose State University is a 2.5 GPA (from the 0.0-4.0 U.S. grading scale) in the last degree completed, or a 2.5 GPA in the last two years of full-time study.

Many graduate programs have higher than minimum GPA requirements. 

Departments make the final decision regarding admission to their majors.

Professional development courses and courses taken in non-accredited institutions are not included in the GPA calculation.

All students must apply to SJSU online through "Cal State Apply". This step must be completed regardless of any other requirements for your major.

Your Application Status 

After you have submitted your application, you must activate your MySJSU account to check your status of your application.

NOTE: Your application will not be evaluated for admission to SJSU until ALL supporting documents have been received.

To activate your MySJSU account:

When you log in, click on your "To Do List" to find information regarding missing documents or test scores that are needed to complete your application.

If you any problem activating your MySJSU account, please fill out the Account Help Form. If you need further assistance, please email the SJSU Help Desk at: ithelpdesk@sjsu.edu.

Be sure to include your full name, SJSU ID and date of application.

Required Documents

English Requirement 

Students who have graduated from a college or university in a country where the primary language is not English must submit the required English language test score before they can be officially admitted to San Jose State University.

The English proficiency exam is waived only if you have received a B.A. or M.A. degree from an accredited U.S. institution OR you have completed 3 years of full-time study in a U.S. institution.

Official Transcripts 

Students applying for Graduate Studies to San Jose State University must obtain a WES "Document by Document" evaluation for all coursework completed at a university or college.

If you are still studying at a college or university at the time that you apply for admission you should still obtain a "work in progress" evaluation from WES. You must have grades for a minimum of 7 semesters evaluated to be considered. Please note: Grades for your final semester, your graduation certificate and/or degree will need to be submitted to WES for a revised evaluation. The deadline to submit the final WES evaluation can be found in your MySJSU account.

Please visit the WES website to learn how you may obtain your evaluation. You will need to order the "Document by Document" (Basic or ICAP) service. Please be sure to follow instructions listed for your country.

Declaration of Finance 

All International Graduate applicants must submit a Declaration of Finance form and a Bank Statement showing a minimum of $38,257.00 USD in funds available for study. All letters verifying funds must be dated within the current year.

  1. If your funds come from your government or a private agency:
    • you must complete and sign the Declaration of Finance
    • you must attach a verification letter on letterhead paper from your government or private agency indicating a minimum of $38,257.00 USD in available funds
  2. If your funds are from an individual sponsor (Self, parents etc):
    • you must complete and sign the Declaration of Finance
    • you must enter the required information regarding your parents or sponsor. 
    • you must attach a letter from your sponsor's bank indicating a minimum of $38,257.00 USD in available funds

Health Insurance 

SJSU requires all inbound international students to purchase the SJSU health insurance coverage prior to registering for classes. You can register for the mandatory SJSU health insurance online.

International Students will not be able to register for classes without first purchasing SJSU health insurance. The comprehensive insurance program includes coverage for accidental injury/sickness, medical evacuation, and repatriation and is also valid when traveling outside the United States. You can view the insurance fees and purchase your insurance online

F-1 students with dependents are recommended to also purchase health insurance for their F-2 dependents.

You may purchase coverage in three different ways:

  • Annually, covering you from August 1 to July 31, or
  • Fall semester only, with coverage from August 1 to January 1, or
  • Spring/summer semester only, with coverage from January 1 to July 31.

How to purchase the University approved health insurance

International students on F-1 and J-1 status are required to purchase the University approved health insurance plan before registering each semester.  A hold will be placed on students' MySJSU record before registration for the next semester begins. Before you try registering for classes be sure to purchase your health insurance plan so the hold can be lifted. Insurance holds will be removed within 48 hours after purchase  

Instructions to Purchase SJSU Health Insurance Plan:  

SJSU approved health insurance plan is administered by JCB however your insurance provider will be Aetna. Please purchase your health insurance from the JCB website.  Follow these steps to purchase the correct plan:

  1. Go to the JCB website
  2. Type in "San Jose State" 
  3. Select "2018-2019 ISSS International Students" 
  4. Select semester or year.
  5. Input your information and payment information as instructed.
  6. The insurance hold will be removed within 48 hours after purchase. 

 

Exemptions from the requirement to purchase the insurance are the following:

  1. Students on a government-sponsored scholarship which provides compatible insurance coverage as a part of the sponsorship.  To clear hold: Submit the request for exemption forms in the ISSS  
  2. Students receiving insurance coverage through an employer-sponsored plan in the United States (i.e. receipt of insurance is a part of the U.S. employment compensation through your spouse). Supplemental Medical Evacuation and Repatriation must be purchased. To clear hold: Submit the request for exemption forms in the ISSS
  3. J-1 participants in the ISEP, International Student Exchange Program.

 

How to obtain your insurance ID card:

The Aetna insurance company does not print and mail medical insurance cards. All cards will be electronic and can be obtained in one of three ways:

1) Mobile Device

a.       Go to www.aetnastudenthealth.com

b.      Select your school name from the drop down menu and click on view your school.

c.       Select the “Print Your ID Card” link

d.      Enter your school issued Student ID number and DOB and click “Submit”

e.       Select your ID card to display it on the screen

f.        Take a screenshot to save it to your phone

2) Your school specific Aetna Student Health webpage

a.       Go to www.aetnastudenthealth.com

b.      Select your school name from the drop down menu and click on view your school.

c.       Select the “Print Your ID Card” link

d.      Enter your school issued Student ID number and DOB in the field and click the “View Card” button.

e.       Select your ID card

f.        Select Print your ID Card

3) Access Aetna Navigator

a.       Go to www.aetnastudenthealth.com

b.      Enter your school name in the “Find your school” field

c.       Select the “For Members” link on the left hand side of the welcome page

d.      Select “Members-only Website”, then click the blue link to “Register/Login” (a new window will open)

e.       If you have already registered for Aetna Navigator, you will log in from this screen

          i. If you have not already registered for Aetna Navigator, you can register from this screen by choosing the “Register” option to sign up for Navigator you will need                        the following information:

                                         1. Aetna ID Number

                                         2. First and Last Name

                                         3. Date of Birth
