Responsible Conduct of Research Training Requirement
For those submitting proposals to the National Science Foundation, please be notified that San Jose State University has contracted with CITI (Collaborative Institutional Training Initiative) to provide tutorials for you and your students on the Responsible Conduct of Research. NSF requires that proposals submitted after January 4, 2010, include an indication that training is available for all students on the proposal (undergraduate and graduate students). You are free to have supplemental or other training to satisfy this requirement, but SJSU decided by going through the Academic Senate policy committee, the Curriculum and Research Committee, that the CITI on-line modules would be of benefit to the university community.
Please note that CITI has provided different types of modules depending upon the discipline area. The categories are Biomedical Responsible Conduct of Research (RCR), Social and Behavioral RCR, Physical Science RCR, Humanities RCR, and RCR for Engineers.
Although the incentive and timing of contracting with CITI were initiated by NSF requirements, the campus community may find these modules to be useful complements to research methods' courses you already have developed for your degree programs. You are encouraged to browse and determine if you would like to make use of the modules.
Please contact Pamela Stacks if you have any questions about the Responsible Conduct of Research modules. You might further note that SJSU has also made Human Subjects Research modules available for work with human participants/subjects in various types of research. Again there are modules that are specific to various discipline areas. If you have any questions about Human Subject Research modules, please contact our IRB Coordinator, Alena Filip.
CITI Training Modules for Responsible Conduct of Research can be accessed through the following link: http://www.citiprogram.org/Default.asp?
New users must register first. There are Steps 1-4 to fill out. Only Step 1 is specific to SJSU - use the pull down menu to select San Jose State University as your Participating Institution. Fill out Steps 2-4 for your personal login information. Hit Submit. The next page will prompt you for member information. Note that only the * items have to be filled in for SJSU purposes. Hit submit. The next page will prompt you for Select Curriculum:
1. Human Subjects Research
3. Responsible Conduct of Research
Select the discipline area(s) you would like to receive access to. Note you can come back at any time and access additional modules. Then you (or your students) can start and stop taking the on-line training as you like.
For a letter to include in NSF grant proposals indicating compliance with the training requirement, see the RCR Statement for Proposals.
Student Funding: Scholarships and Awards
The Office of Graduate Studies & Research along with San Jose State University and the California State University system are proud to sponsor several programs, awards, and competitions designed to cultivate and encourage student research and scholarship for current graduate students. Please browse through our programs listed on the side-bar to find out application requirements, deadlines, and past winners.
In addition SJSU has over 900 general and departmental scholarships available, ranging from $100 to $1,000 per year. Different sources fund these scholarships, including private donors, alumni, and private industry. Awards are generally based on scholastic achievement and financial need. About one-half of the awards are administered by the Financial Aid Scholarship Committee and one-half by the various academic departments on campus. Contact your department or college directly for a list of funding programs they may offer, as well as for information on the various research or teaching assistantships that are available at San José State University.
