Completing a master’s thesis requires planning and attention to deadlines. You should work closely with your thesis committee and/or graduate advisor to meet your departmental deadlines for committee review and the defense of your thesis. A thesis should only be submitted to the Office of Graduate Studies & Research (GS&R) after you have applied for graduation and after all members of your thesis committee have approved your thesis. Other information about applying for graduation, university deadlines, graduation requirements, and forms can be found on the Graduate Admissions and Program Evaluations (GAPE) website.
There are two important deadlines to consider when submitting your thesis to GS&R:
1) Submitting your thesis for initial review, and
2) Submitting your thesis for publication.
Master’s theses are reviewed by GS&R for the Fall, Spring, and Summer semesters. You may submit your thesis up to one month in advance of the deadline. The scheduled deadlines for upcoming semesters are as follows:
Deadlines for submitting your thesis for review by GS&R
(once your thesis committee has approved your thesis and you have applied for graduation)
| Fall (December) 2012 Graduation | Spring (May) 2012 Graduation | Summer (August) 2012 Graduation |
|---|---|---|
| November 1, 2012 | April 5, 2012 | July 2, 2012 |
Deadlines for submitting your thesis for publication
(once GS&R has approved your thesis)
| Fall (December) 2012 Graduation | Spring (May) 2012 Graduation | Summer (August) 2012 Graduation |
|---|---|---|
| January 10, 2013 | June 15, 2012 | September 14, 2012 |
Because deadlines are posted well in advance of each thesis cycle, extensions of the deadline are not granted. It is the responsibility of the author to ensure that the thesis is submitted on time to the Office of Graduate Studies & Research, in the acceptable format outlined in the SJSU Thesis Guidelines (pdf).
Effective Spring 2012 GS&R will require that students submit their thesis for initial review via email. Our office will no longer accept paper copies of the thesis for initial review. Students are expected to follow the steps outlined on this website for submitting their thesis for approval by GS&R and for publication. Failure to submit the thesis as instructed may result in a delay in graduation.
