Writing Skills Test
All CSU students must meet the California Graduation Writing Assessment Requirement (GWAR) as part of their degree requirements. At SJSU, for first baccalaureate students, successful completion of the GWAR is generally a two-stage process: (1) passing the Writing Skills Test (WST) or earning a grade of a "C or Better" (C- not accepted) for SJSU's ENGL 100A or SJSU's LLD 100A, and THEN (2) passing an Area Z (100W) course with a "C or Better" (C- not accepted). All first baccalaureate students must have passed the WST or a 100A course BEFORE they will be allowed to enroll in any SJSU Studies courses (Areas R, S, V, and Z).
Students must have failed the WST twice prior to enrolling in either ENGL 100A or LLD 100A. A score of 11 or 12 on the WST fully satisfies the GWAR, including the Area Z (100W) requirement. However, some departments (see GE Policies & Procedures) still required 100W to satisfy major requirements regardless of the WST score.
