Advising Policy


Advisors in the H&A SSC provide advising and consultation on the following topics:

 

Appointments


To schedule an appointment with an Academic Advisor, stop by the H&A Student Success Center is located in Clark Hall 244, or call us at (408) 924-5095. The H&A Student Success Center does not permit appointments to be made over email, and can only be made in-person or via phone.

When scheduling your appointment, you will be asked to provide the following:

  • Name
  • Student ID
  • Contact information
  • Class level (Freshman, Sophomore, Junior, Senior, or Graduating Senior)
  • Reason for visit (i.e. GE Advising, Probation, SJSU Policy/Procedure, California Promise..etc)

 

Drop-Ins


The H&A Student Success Center offers drop-in periods Monday through Thursday, from 9:30 AM - 11:00 AM, and 1:30 PM to 3:00 PM during the fall and spring semesters. Drop-in hours during winter and summer may vary, so please pay attentive to announcements regarding drop-in hours during these times.

Drop-ins are first-come-first-served, and may be closed without prior notice if the waitlist of individuals waiting is full.

Summer 2019 Drop-In Hours:

Monday     10:00 - 11:30 AM; 1:30 - 3:00 PM
Tuesday     10:00 - 11:30 AM
Thursday     10:00 - 11:30 AM; 1:30 - 3:00 PM

 

Special Extended Hours (during special periods):

Monday through Thursday: 9:00 - 11:30 AM, 1:00 PM - 4:00 PM

 

Should I go to drop-in or make an appointment?


 

Drop-Ins Appointments
  • ~5-10 minute sessions

  • What GE's do I have remaining?

  • Who is my major/minor advisor?

  • Referrals to various campus resources

  • Questions about SJSU policies/procedures 

  • One-semester planning

  • Graduation worksheet review

  • Troubleshooting enrollment

  • Questions that can be answered in one session.

  • ~30 minute sessions

  • Probation/disqualification/reinstatement process assistance

  • Long-term academic planning (two or more semesters)

  • Graduation planning 

  • Specific-case/context-dependent/special circumstance advising.

  • Questions that will require extensive follow-up and follow-through.
