This page is designed to help you configure and setup e-mail client software. This includes Outlook, Apple Mail, Eudora and Thunderbird, as clients for university e-mail servers.
This is not information that will help you configure Workgroup support systems like Outlook becomes when it is used as a direct client to an Exchange server or as Lotus Notes Client software is when it's configured for the University's Lotus Notes Domino Server. If you wish to configure Workgroup Support software please contact your desktop support team. If you do not know how to contact that team, the SJSU Help Desk can do that for you.
This is what you need to know to configure Email client software:
If after you read this page and still do not have this information, the SJSU Help Desk can help you get it. You need to know your user name, your password, your incoming server settings and your outgoing server settings. You must know this information before you can continue setting up Email client software.
There are two types of university e-mail accounts. The first step is to determine which type of university e-mail account you have. The quick way to find out is to look at your Email address. The best clue to determining this is what immediately follows the "@" sign in your e-mail address.
The two types of university wide Email accounts are:
University E-mail (Lotus Notes) accounts are for employees of San Jose State University. E-mail addresses for these accounts end in "@sjsu.edu" (without the quotation marks.) These accounts are typically a user's first name and last name seperated by a period. So, for a hypothetical user named Jane Doe the e-mail address might be "jane.doe@sjsu.edu" (without the quotation marks.) If this is the type of account you have, please follow the options shown below, appropriate for a University E-mail (Lotus Notes) account. In this, and following examples, it should be noted there are deviations from this standard. No two people can have the same e-mail address so if there were two people named Jane Doe they must have different e-mail addresses. In these cases additional attributes are added to the name to ensure uniqueness.
SJSU UNIX accounts are now only issued for students at SJSU. However, some employees still have these accounts from the days when this was the main e-mail system at SJSU. E-mail addresses for these accounts end in "@email.sjsu.edu" (without the quotation marks.) These accounts are typically the first letter of a user's first name and the users last name. There is an eight chracter limit to a user's user name so long names must be truncated. So, for a hypothetical user named Jane Doe the e-mail address might be "jdoe@email.sjsu.edu" (without the quotation marks.) If this is the type of account you have, please follow the options shown below, appropriate for a SJSU UNIX account.
Some organizational units at the university provide their own e-mail services. If your e-mail address ends in something other than the two examples above, these clients are not supported by this help desk. But, the university help desk can help you find out who does support those accounts. University accounts like SJSUOne and MySJSU do not have e-mail services associated with them at this time.
Your user name and password should have been provided to you by your desktop support staff or it could have been on a document you have been provided such as your "blue mailer."
If you just need help with your password then go to this page or you can contact the San Jose State University Help Desk. We will provide this information to you, or start the process for you to get this information for you. We are unable to see your current password with our systems. Due to support protocols we are required to follow, this may require a physical visit to the help desk. There may be a delay in generating a new password for you. We may not be able to provided you a new password right away. We do not have the ability and/or the authority to override these protocols. Assuming you were able to gather all this information, proceed to the next step. If not, the first place to start is the San Jose State University Help Desk.
The incoming server protocol recommended for SJSU e-mail systems is IMAP. Therefore that is the only information we provide here.
Due to the presence of a firewall at SJSU, outgoing e-mail settings vary depending on your physical location. Typically the outgoing server is the same for both University Email (Lotus Notes) accounts and UNIX email accounts.
If you are on the university wired network this is "smtp.sjsu.edu" (without the quotation marks.)
For the on-campus wireless network (operated by Comcast under contract) there are no available SMTP settings. Comcast does not provide SJSU with e-mail sending service. You may not be able to use e-mail client software on the Comcast provided wireless network at SJSU. The alternative is to use a Web browser to get your Email. This is called Web Mail.
If the client is using a home Internet connection provided by a third-party, such as an Internet Service Provider (ISP,) then he/she has to use his/her third party ISP outgoing server address. You may need to contact your service provider to get this information. Assuming you were able to gather all this information, proceed to the next step. If not, the first place to start is the San Jose State University Help Desk.
