Civil Rights Acts of 1964 & 1991

 

Civil Rights Act of 1964

This is the landmark federal legislation that prohibits discrimination in employment and education. It covers race, color, religion, sex and national origin. Title VII of the Civil Rights Act prohibits discrimination in employment. Titles IV and VI protect students at institutions of higher education from discrimination based on race, color and national origin. Title IX prohibits discrimination in higher education on the basis of sex.

Civil Rights Act of 1991

This strengthened and improved the Civil Rights Act of 1964 and provided damages in case of intentional discrimination and harassment. Title II prohibits discrimination against women filling management and decision-making positions, developmental activities and compensation.
