Employers are required by OSHA to determine all exposures to hazards in their work place and determine if personal protective equipment (PPE) should be used to protect their workers. PPEs reduce employee exposure to hazards when engineering and administrative controls are not feasible or effective.

Hazard analysis procedures are used to assess the workplace to determine if hazards are present, or are likely to be present, which necessitate the use of personal protective equipment (PPE). If such hazards are present, or likely to be present, the following actions are taken:

• Select, and have each affected employee use, the proper PPE
• Communicate selection decisions to each affected employee
• Select PPE that properly fits each affected employee
