Wang Family Award


 

Dr. Debra Griffith, San José State University’s Associate Vice President for Transition and Retention Services, has been awarded the 2017 Wang Family Excellence Award in the Staff (Administrator III/IV) category. The Wang Family Excellence Award is given to one administrator and four faculty members from the CSU system who have shown extraordinary achievement in advancing the mission of the university.

This prestigious award reflects the vast contributions Debra has made to supporting students since she arrived at SJSU in 2001 as a resident director with University Housing Services. Through the years she has worked in a variety of roles in Student Affairs and Academic Affairs with increasing responsibilities. Each role has allowed her to strengthen her focus on student success.

When she took over the Educational Opportunity Program (EOP) in 2010, she transformed it into the robust suite of support services that serves more than 2,000 students today, including many first-generation, low-income and educationally disadvantaged students. She continues to oversee EOP and is leading initiatives in SJSU’s Four Pillars of Student Success Plan for Student Affairs.

HR Survey Results

Human Resources (HR), in collaboration with Institutional Effectiveness and Analytics (IEA), administered an employee satisfaction survey in November 2016. We requested thoughtful, honest and candid feedback on accessibility of staff, timeliness of responses, professionalism of staff, accuracy of information, knowledge of staff, and overall satisfaction with services provided. Of the 3,730 employees surveyed, 22.7% completed the assessment. We would like to thank those of you who participated! Customer feedback is invaluable to us, as we continually strive to improve our customer service.

We are reviewing the survey results and identifying areas for improvement and future priorities to provide SJSU employees with the best possible customer experience. Institutional Effectiveness and Analytics (IEA) has been helping us analyze the results and HR management will discuss plans to address any concerns. We plan to share the information with the campus community in the near future.

New MPP Toolkit Available!

The MPP Toolkit has been redesigned after input from you, our users, and we believe it now provides an easier way to find the tools you need. Though it is designed for our MPP employees, the Toolkit is not exclusive and any employee may access the information. We encourage you to take a look around and we welcome your feedback.

HR in the Community 

The holiday season is typically a time where families and friends gather to celebrate another year together, to bond, and to create memorable experiences. For the fortunate families, these celebrations are paired with festivities such as the sharing of meals, holiday traditions, treats and stories. However, there are many who do not have the resources to enjoy the holidays in the same way. On December 14th and 16th, HR staff members volunteered at Sacred Heart to help make the holidays a little brighter for those in need. The staff assisted with accepting, sorting and arranging donations from the local community, sorting fresh produce, clothes and toys, bagging groceries, and delivering these items to visiting families. Interacting with these families was a positive, humbling and rewarding experience.


Stretch Breaks & Ergonomic Evaluations
 


 

We all know we're not supposed to remain seated for hours on end and that we can get more done by taking frequent short breaks to keep our bodies fresh and our minds alert. However, it can be easy to forget. Stretch Break Software reminds computer users to stand up, walk a bit, or stretch at regular intervals.

Stretch Break's interface is intuitive and users should have no trouble configuring the program to their liking, but a built-in help file includes plenty of information about the program's functions. The Options menu contains everything within a single screen, making it easy to navigate. When the program is active, an animated figure demonstrates each stretch, moving automatically to the next one. The program contains 36 different stretching exercises, and users can set the number of stretches per break and select which exercises they want to use. Music can be played during or between stretches or turned off completely. A variety of schedules and alerts are available, so users can customize their stretching routine. Optional ergonomic tips can be shown after each stretch break to help users work more comfortably and safely.

Stretch Break is available for both Mac and PC. This is an optional program that University employees may consider installing on their work and/or home computer.

Please visit the Ergonomics webpage and click the Stretch Break Software button to start the installation process. You will be prompted to create an IT help desk ticket using your SJSU email address and password. Within 48 hours of completing the IT help desk ticket, your local IT rep will contact you for installation assistance. If you wish to download the software on your home computer, you can use the link provided via email after creating your help desk ticket.

Spotlight On The Cabinet:

Vice President for Student Affairs, Reginald “Reggie” Blaylock

Continuing our feature spotlighting our cabinet members, we’re pleased to help you get to know Reggie Blaylock, our Vice President for Student Affairs. Reggie came to SJSU in 2015 after a long career in Student Affairs at our sister campus, San Diego State.

Q: Can you share a bit about your background and your hobbies?

A: I was born and raised in Chicago until my senior year of high school. We then moved to Los Angeles and I instantly fell in love with the ocean! I still love to boogie board and carry my surfboard (since I can’t stand up on it!).

Q: What one thing do you wish everyone knew about San José State University?

A: How much we care about our students and each other.

Q: What impresses you most about the San José State University community?

A: Our rich history and traditions!

Q: What is your high-level vision for SJSU in the coming year?

A: That our students will have the support to graduate in four years if they choose.

Q: Please complete the following sentence: The campus community would be surprised to know…

A: … I began playing trombone in 3rd grade – my arms were too short to fully extend the slide! – and played through 11th grade. I was a music major and maintain a deep appreciation for all musicians, especially those who participate in marching band.


Spring Quarter Reminder

The Direct Deposit Request Forms received by the Payroll Department at the beginning of the semester have been forwarded to the State Controller's Office (SCO) for processing. It will take 45-60 days to establish a deposit to your account. Also, if you are a returning student, staff or faculty member who did not work or receive payroll deposits for the past 60 days you may need to reapply for direct deposit. The SCO generally purges inactive accounts every 60 days.

Also, payroll tax exemptions for 2016 will expire in February. To re-establish exempt status complete a new Employee Action Request Form and or a Student SPAR Form and forward to Human Resources. To discuss payroll related matters, please see Your HR Representatives to locate and contact the Payroll Representative for your department.

W-2 Reminders 

W-2's ​were printed and mailed by the State Controller’s Office January 23rd. The mailing addresses used were those on file with Human Resources as of December 18, 2016.

​If you changed your address after the December 18th cutoff date and are unable to obtain your W-2 from your previous address, you may request a duplicate W-2 from the State Controller’s Office using the Duplicate Wage and Tax Statement Request form.
