Bio/Academic Interests:Dr. Kelly Bloom has been a member of the Department of Hospitality, Recreation and Tourism Management since 2005. Kelly earned her doctorate from the Department of Parks, Recreation and Tourism at the University of Utah. Dr. Bloom’s research interests and expertise include outdoor recreation leadership, experiential education, youth development, natural resource management, wilderness spirituality, measurement, and evaluation. Kelly serves on the curriculum committee for Project Great Outdoors, a non-profit focused on providing outdoor recreation and leadership experience for underserved youth. In her free time, Kelly enjoys whitewater rafting, recreational kayaking, hiking, traveling, and seeing live music. The coolest thing she has ever done is play basketball with a polar bear. Bio/Academic Interests:Retiring in 2000 after a thirty two year career in municipal recreation in three different cities, the last twenty years spent serving as the Director of Parks and Recreation for the city of Cupertino. I have been a part-time faculty member at SJSU since 1979. During that time I have also taught at Sacramento and San Francisco state universities. In the spring of 2004, I was honored with the departments Mary S. Wiley award for teaching excellence. |

| Recent/Current Courses Taught:HRTM 107 - Legal Aspects of Hospitality Management, Business 80 - Business Law Bio/Academic Interests:Mr. Dworak is partner in Berliner Cohen,San Jose’s largest business law firm dedicated to serving the business needs of Silicon Valley. (www.berliner.com). Among many other projects, his law firm represented the developer who revamped downtown San Jose with the marquee Fairmont Hotel. He helped launch the Hospitality Management program at SJSU, and has received many accolades for his teaching. Professionally he has served with distinction as Special Master for the California State Bar and as a Judge Pro Tem for the Superior Court of California. His peers has recognized as on of the “Best Lawyers in Silicon Valley for 2004 – 2008 by the San Jose Magazine. After conducting annual surveys of over 52,000 lawyers and judges, the Law & Politics Edition of the San Francisco Magazine has identified his as a Northern California Super Lawyer for 2004, 2007 and 2008. He attended Roxbury Memorial High School (Boys), held an athletic scholarship to Deleware State University, where he received his bachelor's degree in Health and Physical Education. He received a Mott Fellowship at San Jose State University where he also earned his MA in Education Administration & Community Education. Mr. Hewitt has held professional positions as a teacher in Boston Public Schools; Executive Director, City of San Jose Parks & Recreation Department, Neighborhood Services Program; Founder/Executive Director, Santa Cruz West Mission Street Health Center. His awards include Delaware State University Athletic Hall of Fame, 3 California Parks and Recreation Society Excellence Awards, and the Martin Luther King "Good Neighbor" Award. |
| Recent/Current Courses Taught:HRTM 100W - Writing, HRTM 10 - Creating A Meaningful Life, HRTM 90 - Recreation Foundations, HRTM 134 - Human Resource Management Bio/Academic Interests:A recently retired Supervisor with the City of Oakland's Parks and Recreation Department, Mr. Lange has also been active for some time as an actor, playwright and director in the Bay Area. His most recent play was directing 'Shakespeare's Lost Masterpiece' in San Francisco and Oakland, a world premiere. He has won awards for 'Best Director' and 'Best Play' in 2001 and 2003 respectively. Also in 2003 he won 'Best Supporting Actor' at the ARTYS Drama Awards ceremonies. Since 1990 Lange toured the United States extensively portraying the fiery human rights leader Malcolm X, in over 750 live performances. Lange also writes and performs with 'Light Harmony and Sound', a folk-blues guitar trio. He has been teaching the 'Creating A Meaningful Life' course at San Jose State since 1998. |

He is a graduate of San Jose State University and City College of San Francisco and has earned the prestigious Foodservice Management Professional (FMP) designation from the National Restaurant Association. His extensive management experience includes owning a restaurant and catering business and managing a high volume motorcycle dealership. Richard has kept busy as a freelance journalist, a real estate investor, Motorcycle Safety Instructor and endurance athlete. In 2007 he completed his seventh marathon and an athletic career highlight, Ironman Triathlon. Richard has been a lecturer at San Jose State University since 1995. He helped create several classes and provides oversight to a unique class working in partnership with Pebble Beach Resorts. |

Professionally and personally Linda Lives creatively and abundantly. Her current professional pursuits are many and include: SJSU professor, professional clown, life coach, grief counselor, and workshop presenter through her business Surprise Enterprise. You probably have met her yourself as she is a well known leader of groups for children through seniors, and consultants around the world with for-profit and non-profit organizations in the areas of leadership, teamwork, life balance, creativity and so much more. | Recent/Current Courses Taught:HRTM 10 - Creating a Meaningful Life, Rec 500 - Organization of Recreation and Lesisure Services (SFSU), Rec 862 - Management of Leisure Services (SFSU) Bio/Academic Interests:Dave is currently the Director of the Mountain View Community Services Department and has been for the past 17 plus years. Prior to his appointment in Mountain View he was the Director of Parks and Leisure Services for the City of Milpitas for 11 years. He has Bachelor of Science Degree in Recreation Administration and a Masters Degree in Public Administration, both from California State University, Hayward. Entering his seventh semester at San Jose State, Dave has also taught part time at San Francisco State University in the Department of Recreation and Leisure Studies at both the graduate and undergraduate level. He is an active member of the California Parks and Recreation Society, the National Recreation and Parks Association and an honorary member of the Sports Association of Northern California Recreation Agencies. He is also a Registered Recreator with the California Board of Park and Recreation Personnel. This past July, Dave and his wife Gail celebrated their 32nd wedding anniversary. They have 3 wonderful children: Jared (28), Chelsea (21) and Tyler (19). Their newest joy is 16 month Tanner, their first and only grandson. In his leisure time, Dave enjoys fishing, dog training, wakeboarding, softball, listening to jazz music and yes spending time with Tanner. |

Her dissertation research explored the phenomenon of integrating personal transformation after transformative travel. This research is based upon anthropology, wilderness therapy, psychology, and recreational therapy literature. The outcomes show a pattern of recognizable and predictable experiences post-transformation. Suzy is dedicated to the SJSU Mission of facilitating global perspectives by leading study abroad programs to Peru and Costa Rica that contribute to the preservation of indigenous wisdom and introduction of sacred play. Dr. Ross provides support to the community through volunteerism and consultation services. As a therapist, she specializes in the treatment of post traumatic stress, women survivors of sexual trauma, and the use of adventure therapy. As a scholar, she has published research in a peer-reviewed international journal and has been a speaker at conferences locally, nationally, and internationally. Links: |

Uhlik is a tenure-track Assistant Professor in the Department of Hospitality, Recreation, and Tourism Management atSan Jose State University, and coordinator of its Creating a Meaningful Life course cohort. His Ph.D. program was grounded in leadership and research, balanced by practical experience in leadership positions with a Visitors & Convention Bureau, a commercial recreation S-Corporation, and several municipal Parks and Recreation departments.Kim's research seeks to discover and develop a partnership-based philosophy and practice that promotes responsible entrepreneurship, stakeholder empowerment, proactive stewardship, sustainable development, and innovative pedagogy through the personal and organizational transformation that leads to life satisfaction and fulfillment.He has published articles related to both partnership and pedagogy, and several of his courses involve community-centered class projects. Randy earned his doctorate from the College of Natural Resources at Utah State University. Prior to joining SJSU in the summer of 2008, he served as a faculty member and founding Director of the School of Community Resources and Development at Arizona State University. Dr. Virden’s research interest and expertise include the application of social science knowledge to parks and protected area management, leisure and tourism behavior, tourism development, natural resource planning and policy, visitor management, and nature-based tourism. His research projects include working with the National Park Service, U.S. Forest Service, Bureau of Land Management, Arizona Office of Tourism, Arizona State Parks, Maricopa County Parks and Recreation Department and Phoenix Parks and Recreation Department.
