How to Apply to SJSU

Undergraduate Students

  • Apply online using CSU mentor.
  • Deadlines for undergraduate student admissions.
  • Transcripts to SJSU.
  • New Frosh: Attend Orientation as it is a mandatory overnight program for ALL first-time freshmen at the University.
  • Transfer Students: For students transferring from another college, attend SJSU Transfer Information Program (TIP).
  • Tracking application status: you will receive a UserID and password after submitting your online application. Use this information to check the status of your application. You will be notified when you can register for classes once your application is successfully accepted by SJSU.

Graduate Students

  • Check SJSU graduate studies website for information on application procedures and deadlines.
  • Apply online using CSU mentor.

Transferring to HRTM from another SJSU Major

  • It's quite simple. Just complete and turn in a Change of Major form and check in with our HRTM staff for direction on who to contact to set up an appointment.

How to Apply for Graduation

  • Undergraduate Students
    • Complete (signed by your advisor) and turn in your HRTM major for to the department office 1 year in advance of the date you plan to graduate. This will help us with scheduling of courses.
      • Details: Hospitality Management Baccalaureate Students
        • Meet with an Advisor from Business Student Advisement Center, BBC 008 to complete your minor form. Your official form will be sealed in an envelope.
        • Fill out your HSPM major form entirely. For classes taken during the filing semester, put IP (in progress) for grades. For classes taken after the filing date, use semester and year for grades (for example Fall07=F07, Spring08=S08).
        • Make an appointment to see your assigned HRTM Advisor.
          • Bring attached to your major form a copy of your signed Business minor form and unofficial transcripts.
          • The Advisor will go through the major form with you and answer any questions you have related to graduation.
          • Once signed by your advisor, you should bring all materials to the HRTM office for the chair to review and sign. Plan on at least 48 hours for your form to be signed by the Chair.
          • Once your form is signed, you will receive a sealed envelope for HRTM staff to be turned into Undergraduate Studies. It is your responsibility to turn in
            • 1) SJSU Graduation Application
            • 2) signed and sealed major form
            • 3) signed and sealed minor form
      • Details: Recreation & Leisure Studies Baccalaureate Students
        • Make an appointment to see your assigned HRTM Advisor to go over your form. Bring unofficial transcripts when you have your appointment.
          • The Advisor will go through the major form with you and answer any questions you have related to graduation.
          • Once signed by your advisor, you should bring all materials to the HRTM office for the chair to review and sign. Plan on at least 48 hours for your form to be signed by the Chair.
          • Once your form is signed, you will receive a sealed envelope for HRTM staff to be turned into Undergraduate Studies. It is your responsibility to turn in
            • 1) SJSU Graduation Application
            • 2) signed and sealed major form
            • 3) signed and sealed minor form (if applicable)
    • One semester ahead of your intended graduation date file your application for graduation. Check information on SJSU site.
  • Graduate Students

Student Clubs

With the recent merger of the Recreation & Leisure Studies Department and the Hospitality Management Department, we're looking forward to facilitating the founding of an HRTM student club with FIGs (Focus Interest Group) for students with similar interests to connect. Any students interested in working on the development of the club and/or a FIG please contact the Department Chair Dr. Shifflett.

In addition to this Departmental Student Club, SJSU is home to nearly 200 student clubs/organizations that help make campus life vibrant and complement the academic side of what SJSU has to offer. The array of opportunities to engage in and really get the most out of your collegiate experience is truly amazing. There is something for everyone! The Bachelor of Science in Recreation and Leisure Studies prepares students for a variety of careers in agencies serving the leisure needs and interests of society including:

Professional Organizations

Degree Programs

The Hospitality, Recreation & Tourism Management Department offers three degree programs and a minor. At the undergraduate level there are programs leading to a Baccalaureate degree in Recreation, a Baccalaureate degree in Hospitality Management, and a minor in Recreation. At the graduate level there is a program leading to an MS in Recreation.

To get started, check in with our HRTM staff for direction on who to contact to set up an appointment. At that meeting you'll get details about the program along with information to facilitate progress to graduation. You will also be given contact information for the faculty member who will serve as your academic advisor throughout your studies. Whether you are transferring from another SJSU program, another College, or you're just beginning your studies here at SJSU we will guide and assist you in achieving your goals.

B.S. Recreation

The Bachelor's degree in Recreation is a nationally accredited program comprised of a core set of classes (39 units), electives (up to 28 units), and course work (9-15 units) associated with one of these concentrations:

  • Recreation Administration
  • Therapeutic Recreation

Recreation Minor

The minor in Recreation (15 units) complements many major courses of study in other departments at the University such as business, early childhood education, environmental studies, gerontology, health sciences, hospitality management, justice studies, kinesiology, and public relations. B.S. Hospitality Tourism & Event Management

The Bachelor's degree in Hospitality Tourism & Event Management is comprised of a core set of classes (32 units), electives (27 units), and foundational course work (8 units). Hotel & Restaurant Management Minor

The minor in hotel & restaurant management is designed for students who would like to apply the skills and knowledge acquired through their major in the hotel and/or restaurantant industry. For details contact our HRTM staff for direction on who to contact to set up an appointment.

M.S. Recreation

All Masters programs at SJSU are comprised of 30 units which includes a culminating thesis or project. The program is designed to meet early as well as advanced career goals through individualize plans of study. To be eligible to enter this program, applicants must have an overall undergraduate GPA of at least 2.5 and a GPA of 3.0 in the last 60 units of coursework.

The program is comprised of a set of core courses (12 units), a thesis or project and elective coursework. For those interested in focusing their studies a concentration is available in:
