September 26, 2013 - SF Luncheon

On September 26, four of our HFTP Student Chapter members and Dr. Huang attended the HFTP Northern California Chapter Luncheon at the Marriott, San Francisco. Mr. David Lund, a hotel financial leadership coach, presented his training course materials on hotel finance and accounting. The topics covered understanding the budget, balance sheet and income statement, as well as how effective communication makes everyone more successful.
Mr. Tony Lianos, the president of HFTP Nor. Cal. Chapter hosted the luncheon. He informed the students to check out the website, www.hospitalityscholarships.org, where the students can apply for scholarships. The students met a number of hotel controllers and had a great conversation with them. Tony shared his personal story as a "pizza boy" in college with the students, and encouraged the students to pursue their dreams with passion. The students learned that it is important to think outside of the box and create value in order to distinguish us from others. It is also extremely important to keep an optimistic attitude despite all the adversity we face in our lives.
Dr. Huang discussed several collaborative opportunities between the Student Chapter and Nor. Cal. Chapter with the officers. Tony is very supportive and willing to help with student's career development. Collaboration initiatives include starting a professional mentoring program, holding a hospitality, finance and technology symposium, and fundraising for the Student Chapter.
Overall, the luncheon was very meaningful to our SJSU Student Chapter. It was the first time for the students to connect with the Nor. Cal. Chapter. It helped the students to learn more about HFTP Association, and open the door for future collaborations between the Student Chapter and Nor. Cal. Chapter.
