F-1 Transfer Students: How to Apply


If you have an F-1 visa and are eligible to transfer to our program, please follow these steps: 

1. Apply Online and Pay Application Fee

Submit an online application and pay the $150 non-refundable application fee. We recommend applying at least 3 weeks prior to the program start date.
You will receive a confirmation email from our admissions office with your User ID and PIN number to the Admissions Tracking Site (ATS). The ATS is the fastest and most efficient way to check your application status.

2. Submit Required Documents

Required documents must be submitted at least 3 weeks prior to the start date of your program. Email all required documents to igateways-admission@sjsu.edu.

 Application Materials for Academic and Test Preparation (ATP)

  • Passport Page
  • F-1 visa page
  • Electronic I-94
  • Copies of I-20s from all previous schools
  • Bank Statement in English of at least $34,700 USD
  • Financial Statement Form for ATP

 Application Materials for Semester at SJSU (SAS)

  • Passport Page
  • F-1 visa page
  • Electronic I-94
  • Copies of I-20s from all previous schools
  • Bank Statement in English of at least $17,600 USD
  • Financial Statement Form  for SAS
  • Proof of English Proficiency

Please allow 5-7 working days for our admissions office to process your documents.

3. Complete Transfer Form

You will receive an acceptance letter and transfer form once you are admitted to our program. Give a copy of your acceptance letter and transfer form to your current school.  The current school must email the completed transfer form igateways-admission@sjsu.edu and transfer your SEVIS record electronically to San Jose State University, International and Extended Studies.

4. Pay Tuition

After your SEVIS record has been transferred to our program, you will receive a tuition payment email with directions on how to pay full tuition for your first term. Review our refund policy prior to paying full tuition.

5. Report to International Gateways Office, Pick up Transfer I-20, and Purchase Health Insurance

After our office receives your full tuition payment, we will notify you when you can pick up your transfer I-20 in our office. You must bring your passport when you report to our office.

6. Arrange Housing (if Necessary)
