Registration and Holds
Registration—How, When, Where?
SJSU utilizes online registration which is available during a certain time period. You might not be able to register for classes if you have any holds on your record. It is important that students take care of any holds before the registration period to be able to enroll in the classes you want.

What are holds and why do I have them?
Holds are electronic restrictions on your ability to register for classes. You can periodically check your “Holds” online through your MySJSU account. Follow the instructions provided on your MySJSU on how to clear them.
Some common holds on registration:
- International Student Insurance
International students in F-1 status must purchase the University approved health coverage before registering for classes each semester. The insurance hold will not be removed from your MYSJSU record without the insurance purchase. The University approved health plan can be purchased online. After you purchase the insurance, the hold will be removed within 24 hours.
You forgot to take the placement test, or it hasn’t been scored and recorded yet. You will have to take the exam first before you may register.
You never saw an academic advisor. Call your major department for an advising appointment.
You must submit a final transcript or verification of classes to Academic Advising and Retention Services (undergraduate students) or Graduate Admissions and Program Evaluation (graduate students). You may lose all of your classes if you fail to turn in these records by the stated deadline.
- Prerequisites Have Not Been Met
You didn’t take the necessary course to proceed to the next level of instruction. You may be blocked from this course until you show the instructor) that you met the prerequisites.
- Immunization Holds
As a new student, you will need to provide proof of Measles and Hepatitis B immunization prior to registering for your second semester of classes. If you don’t have documentation, go the SJSU Health Center to get your shots and proof of immunizations. Bring the forms to the Student Services Center or fax them to 408-924-2050.
Go to the Registrar's Office for additional information.
All fees and payment deadlines are posted on your MySJSU account. Please check your MySJSU account for fees and payment deadlines. You will not receive any payment requests in the mail. If you do not pay your fees by the deadline you will be dropped from all the classes you have registered for. You may not re-enroll in these classes until the fees are paid. Your immigration status also will be affected if this is not taken care of by the deadline.
