The Justice Studies Department provides a broad, research based interdisciplinary curriculum that addresses issues of justice and injustice in our rapidly changing world. We offer a B.S., M.S., and minor in Justice Studies, and an interdisciplinary B.S. in Forensic Science with an emphasis in either Biology or Chemistry. We also co-sponsor, with the departments of Political Science and Communication Studies, the interdisciplinary minor in Legal Studies.
Our students receive training that prepares them for a wide range of justice related careers. Students are also well prepared to pursue further education in justice studies research, law, and public policy studies. Our recent graduates have gone on to become professionals within the criminal justice system, have pursued careers in non-profit justice related agencies, and have continued their education in law schools and in a wide range of masters level and doctoral programs.
Our full time faculty hold advanced degrees in various social science, humanities, and life science fields and is comprised of leaders in their respective academic specialties, including recognized experts and scholars in the areas of policing and law enforcement policy; punishment, corrections and the death penalty; DNA and forensic science; law and society; sociolegal theory and jurisprudence; globalization; gender and justice; history; and family violence, mediation and restorative justice. Our faculty serve in a variety of academic and professional organizations, sit on the editorial boards of leading journals in the field, and publish their research in a wide range of academic journals and law reviews, books, and edited volumes.
Starting in Fall 2010, the Justice Studies Department has declared impaction and all applicants compete for admission. Non-local applicants are strongly encouraged to apply to an additional campus that offers the desired major. Supplemental course criteria is required of transfers.
