How We Can Work with Your Students

Tutors at LARC guide students to understand course concepts and develop the strategies and skills they need to be successful in their courses and academic pursuits. Students may schedule appointments with tutors, come in for same-day appointments, or use the Math and Writing Drop-in Labs (after the 4th week of the semester). Same-day appointments are not available for all subjects at all times. Students can check the LARC tutor schedule in order to determine the best times to come in for tutoring.

How You Can Verify That Your Students Have Met with a Tutor

To protect the privacy and confidentiality of student records, LARC tutors and staff do not discuss the services that individual students receive at the Center. If you would like proof that your students have met with a tutor, ask your students to speak with the LARC Front Desk Staff and request an electronic attendance report, which they can then submit to you.

Class Announcements

Tutors are available to make class announcements during the first six weeks of the semester. These short presentations will inform you and your students about LARC’s services. If you would like to request a class announcement, contact LARC’s Tutorial Coordinator, Karin Winnard at (408) 924-3346 or karin.winnard@sjsu.edu with the following information: your name, the course and section number, class meeting times and days, and the building and room number.

Workshops

Karin Winnard, LARC's Tutorial Coordinator, presents the workshop "Learning & Memory Techniques" for the Spartan Success Workshop Series, and can present this workshop to your class upon request. This workshop introduces students to empowering study and learning strategies. Contact Karin Winnard at (408) 924-3346 or karin.winnard@sjsu.edu with the following information: your name, the course and section number, class meeting times and days, and the building and room number.

Information for Your Greensheet/Syllabus

The Learning Assistance Resource Center (LARC) is located in Room 600 in the Student Services Center. It is designed to assist students in the development of their full academic potential and to inspire them to become independent learners. The Center's tutors are trained and nationally certified by the College Reading and Learning Association (CRLA). They provide content-based tutoring in many lower division courses (some upper division) as well as writing and study skills assistance. Small group, individual, and drop-in tutoring are available. Please visit the LARC website for more information (http://www.sjsu.edu/larc/).

LARC Tutors

LARC tutors are nationally certified by College Reading and Learning Association (CRLA). LARC's peer tutors are undergraduate and graduate students who have demonstrated proficiency in the subjects that they tutor (usually by having completed the courses they are tutoring with an "A" or "B"). Before each applicant is considered for a tutoring position, s/he must successfully complete the pre-screening, interview, and application process and submit 2 letters of recommendation from a SJSU faculty member in the disciplines in which s/he wants to tutor. For writing tutors, a letter from a faculty member who can evaluate the applicant’s writing skills is required. For Level I CRLA Certification, tutors need to complete 25 hours of face to face tutoring once hired in addition to fully participating in and completing the assessment and evaluation process conducted by the Tutorial Coordinator. Completion of Level II CRLA Certification requires an additional 25 hours of face to face tutoring as a hired tutor in LARC; attendance, participation in, and completion of designated Level II training; and full participation in and completion of the assessment and evaluation process.

If you would like to see any of your students become tutors, please encourage them to read our website and contact the LARC front desk to start the pre-screening process.
