Tutors at LARC help students understand course concepts and develop strategies and skills they need to be successful in their courses. Students may request assigned tutors whom they see once per week for the entire semester, or they can drop in to see tutors if they need more limited assistance. Drop-in tutoring is not available for all subjects at all times. Students should check with individual tutors in order to determine the best times to come for drop-in tutoring. If you need more assistance, please call LARC at (408) 924-2587.
LARC tutors are undergraduate and graduate students who have demonstrated proficiency in the subjects that they tutor (usually by having completed the courses they are tutoring with a grade of an A or a B). Before each applicant is considered for a tutoring position, he or she also must submit a letter of recommendation from a faculty member in the discipline in which he or she wants to tutor or, for writing tutors, from a faculty member who can evaluate the applicant’s writing skills. All new LARC tutors participate in twelve hours of tutor training, and writing tutors participate in an additional twelve hours of discipline-specific training. For more information, see Tutor Training.
If you would like to refer a student from ASPIRE, Athletics, DRC, EOP, or another program please have the student fill-out the Student Referral Form and bring it to the LARC.
If you have a student you would like to apply for a tutorial position at the LARC please fill-out the Tutor Job Application and have the student bring it, along with the other documents listed on the application, to the LARC. Please have the student turn-in the application along with the other documents all at the same time.
