Criteria to change or declare your major to Bachelor of Science in Business Administration

Minimum criteria to change your major to the Bachelor of Science in Business Administration (BSBA) or change your BSBA concentration (13 options)

Note: we can only accommodate a limited number of students to the BSBA major, concentrations or minors due to capacity limitations.  Meeting the minimum criteria listed in this document does not guarantee approval of your change of major/concentration petition.  We will rank and approve students based on how well they meet the requirements listed below and our capacity limitations.

60 OR MORE UNITS EARNED (UE) – UPPER DIVISION STUDENTS:

Students interested in our academic programs should meet with a JHSSC advisor to create an academic plan:

Accounting, Accounting Information Systems (AIS), or Corporate Accounting & Finance (CAF) concentrations:

  • Generally, successful applicants have at least an SJSU cumulative GPA of 3.0 or greater
  • Preparation for the Major courses:
    • ENGL 2: Critical Thinking and Writing (GE: A3) with a grade of C or better.  Also accepted, ENGL 1B: Argument and Analysis (GE: C2)
    • MATH 71: Calculus for Business and Aviation (GE: B4) with a grade of C or better
    • ECON 1A: Principles of Economics: Macroeconomics with a grade of D- or better
    • ECON 1B: Principles of Economics (GE: D1): Microeconomics with a grade of D- or better
  • BSBA Lower-Division Courses (grade of C or better): 
    • BUS2 90: Business Statistics
    • BUS1 20: Financial Accounting
  • BSBA Upper-Division Courses:
    • 12 units of letter graded upper-division business core or concentration courses.
    • Earn at least a “B” grade in Bus1 121A - Intermediate Accounting. Note that if you receive a grade of C or better in Business 121A, you will not be able to repeat it for grade forgiveness
    • Students who have repeated any Accounting course more than one time are ineligible to change their concentration to Accounting

Finance concentration:

  • SJSU cumulative GPA: 2.6 or greater
  • Preparation for the Major courses (grade of C or better):
    • ENGL 2: Critical Thinking and Writing (GE: A3).  Also accepted, ENGL 1B: Argument and Analysis (GE: C2)
    • MATH 71: Calculus for Business and Aviation (GE: B4)
    • ECON 1A: Principles of Economics: Macroeconomics
    • ECON 1B: Principles of Economics: Microeconomics (GE: D1)
  • BSBA Lower-Division Courses (grade of C or better):
    • BUS2 90:Business Statistics
    • BUS1 20: Financial Accounting
    • BUS1 21: Managerial Accounting
  • BSBA Upper-Division Courses:
    • 12 units of letter graded upper-division business core or concentration courses
    • Earn at least a “C” grade in Bus1 170 – Fundamentals of Finance

Marketing concentration:

  • SJSU cumulative GPA: 2.6 or greater
  • Preparation for the Major courses:
    • ENGLISH 2: Critical Thinking and Writing (GE: A3) with a grade of C or better.  Also accepted, English 1B: Argument and Analysis (GE: C2)
    • MATH 71: Calculus for Business and Aviation (GE: B4) with a grade of C or better
    • ECON 1A: Principles of Economics: Macroeconomics with a grade of D- or better
    • ECON 1B: Principles of Economics: Microeconomics with a grade of D- or better
  • BSBA Lower-Division Courses:
    • BUS2 90: Business Statistics with a grade of C or better
    • BUS1 20: Financial Accounting with a grade of C or better
    • BUS1 21: Managerial Accounting with a grade of D- or better
  • BSBA Upper-Division Courses:
    • ENGL 100WB, or LLD 100WB or COMM 100W (take this in your first semester to avoid delays in changing your major/concentration)
    • BUS2 130 (take this in your first semester or ASAP to avoid delays in changing your major/concentration)
    • One upper-division business core or marketing concentration course
    • One upper-division business core or marketing concentration course

other nine concentrations:

  • SJSU Cumulative GPA: 2.6 or greater
  • Preparation for the Major courses:
    • ENGLISH 2: Critical Thinking and Writing (GE: A3) with a grade of C or better.  Also accepted, English 1B: Argument and Analysis (GE: C2)

45 TO 59 SJSU CUMULATIVE UNITS GRADED (UG) – LOWER-DIVISION STUDENTS:

Students interested in our:
