Criteria to Change/declare a minor in Business

The Business Minor is designed for students majoring in any non-business degree. The Business Minor provides course work through which non-business students can obtain skills and learn tools used in business.
Non-business students may add the Business minor when they are currently enrolled or have successfully completed all the required coursework for the minor. Complete a Change of Major/Minor Request Form and meet with an advisor in the Jack Holland Student Success Center in the Boccardo Business Complex (BBC) Room 008 during walk-in advising hours: Monday – Thursday from 9:00 am – 11:30, 1:00 pm -3:00 pm and Friday from 8:30 am – 11:30 am.
- Business Minor forms are accepted after the drop deadline for the Fall and Spring semesters in the Boccardo Business Complex (BBC) 008.
- Non-Business majors planning to minor in business must
- Earn a combined cumulative GPA of 2.0 (“C”) or above in all Business courses
- Complete 12 units of minor coursework that is separate and distinct from the
coursework in one’s major, although courses in support of the major may be included in the minor.
- Complete 6 units of Business courses at San José State University.
- Complete a minimum of 15 units in Business that must include the following classes
- Complete the appropriate Change of Major/Minor petition and bring the petition and
required documentation to BBC Room 008
- BUS1 20N Survey of Accounting
Introduction to accounting theory and techniques for business minors and non-business majors. Principles are applied to accumulating and summarizing financial data; critical analysis and interpretation of financial statements. Prerequisite: Sophomore status recommended, non-business majors only. (3 units)
BUS1 20 Financial Accounting
Accounting postulates and principles; application of accounting theory to accumulate and summarize financial data; critical analysis and interpretation of financial statements.Prerequisite: MATH 071. (3 units)
- BUS3 160 Fundamentals of Management and Organizational Behavior
Provides a foundation for major topics in management and organizational behavior by surveying theories and practices relating to managerial roles, organizational cultures, fundamental strategic issues, planning, team building, communication, motivation, leadership, decision-making, control, structure and change. Prerequisites: Upper division standing. Lower Division Business Pool or Business Minor. (3 units)
- Three (3) additional Businesses courses, one of which must be upper-division.
BUS1 10, Discovering Business, is highly recommended for undeclared majors who are considering Business as a major. It may be used for the minor. (3 units)
Aviation majors take most of the courses they need for a minor in Business while they complete support course and major requirements for the degree. The minor in Business is encouraged for all Aviation majors, but is not required at this time. This form describes the most common Business minor courses taken by Aviation majors – this is not a formally agreed upon minor program, so it requires review and approval by the Jack Holland Student Success Center (JHSSC) staff. If you are an Aviation major and would like to complete a minor in Business, please first consult with your major advisor and review the minor requirements. Then meet with an advisor in the Jack Holland Student Success Center to complete a minor form.
The curricular path for a Minor in Business with an Emphasis in Management for Industrial Technology Majors is based on the recommendations of faculty and administrators from the Lucas College of Business and the Department of Aviation & Technology. Students are responsible for reviewing the current catalog for course descriptions and pre-requisites.
