Program Overview

The SJSU MST Program offers three different Certificates in Advanced Taxation. These are available to individuals who already have an MST or MBT degree from a US institution. Each certificate consists of three courses beyond what was taken for your MST or MBT degree. The courses are offered as part of the MST program. They aim to help a tax practitioner further hone knowledge in particular areas of interest.

Cost

  • $645 per unit/ $1935 per 3-unit course
  • $5,805 total cost

Admission Requirements/How to Apply

To enroll in a Certificate of Advanced Taxation program, you must hold an MST or MBT from a US institution.  Classes will be taken through Special Session Open University. Please note, you may not take classes through Open University if you have previously been denied admission to an SJSU graduate program. 

To apply, please submit the pre-screening form at least two weeks prior to the first class you wish to take.  We will evaluate your credentials and notify you of the results.

If you are notified that you are eligible, please continue following the Registration Instructions (below).

*You only need to complete the pre-screening process once, but will be required to submit the registration form prior to each class.

Registration Instructions

Complete the Open University Registration Form (PDF)  each term.  The class schedule can be found here.

Please scan or take a picture of the form and email it to catherine.dougherty@sjsu.edu at least one week prior to the beginning of the class you wish to take. This is a standardized form that is processed by a different SJSU office. Therefore, you may notice that the form repeats many of the questions you were asked on the application. We apologize for the repetitive steps and appreciate your cooperation.

  1. The Lucas Graduate School of Business will screen your form and forward it to the Registrar's Office.
  2. You will be notified by email when you are officially registered in the course. We will give you your SJSU ID number, as well as the due date for the tuition fee.
  3. Pay the tuition fee. See the Registration Form for payment methods.
