Application Information for International Applicants - MSA

International Applicants are defined as individuals who hold F-1 or J-1 Visas.

Step 1:

Complete the
 International Application online at CSUMentor.

  • Indicate Application Term – Summer


  • For MAJOR PROGRAM/ OBJECTIVE select BUS ADMIN: Accountancy

  • Leave the CONCENTRATION option blank.


  • Leave the EMPHASIS/CONCENTRATION option blank.

  • Leave the ALTERNATIVE MAJOR section blank.

  • Be sure to enter a full street address (P.O. Boxes are not accepted) and a valid email address. 

  • If you have taken the GMAT or GRE, please enter your score. If you have not taken the GMAT or GRE yet please enter a date in order to be able to move forward in the application process.

  • Omit the Statement of Purpose section on the application and follow the guidelines on Step 5 number 2 on the Lucas REQUIRED ITEMS section.

  • Once you have completed your application, you must pay a non-refundable application fee of $55.00 either online via credit/debit card, or mail a check or money order to Graduate Admissions and Programs Evaluations (GAPE). If you’re mailing a check or money order, be sure to include a copy of the "Application Agreement Statement" with your payment.

Step 2:

Submit a completed
 Declaration of Finance form and copy of your current passport. Go to Graduate Admissions and Programs Evaluation (GAPE) for instructions.

About the Declaration of Finance:

In addition to the online application all international applicants MUST submit a Declaration of Finance. Your application will be delayed if GAPE does not receive this completed form.


Federal immigration regulations require that all international students provide evidence of adequate funds to meet the financial obligations of enrollment at a U.S. university. The combined U.S. dollar amount from you or your sponsor(s) must equal or exceed the minimum listed for the applied term. Previous applicants must submit a new declaration of finance with a new bank statement attached if the previous application was older than one year. The types of funds that are accepted and how they should be declared are:

  • Funds from a government or a private agency – The student must attach a verification letter on letterhead from the government or agency stating the amount that will be received.

  • Funds from an individual sponsor or self-sponsor – The sponsor must sign a Declaration of Finance or provide a signed letter declaring intent to sponsor.

  • If a student has their own funds, the Declaration of Finance must be signed by the student. A bank verification (example: a copy of bank statement) of all funds must be provided and dated within the current year.

  • A copy of your current passport will also be required. The name listed on your passport will be the same name that will be used on your I-20 if you are offered admission. There will be no exceptions to this rule.

Federal/State financial aid is not available to international students. Visit the University’s financial  page to see other types of aid that are available.

Step 3:

If you have not already done so, take the GMAT or GRE exam and have the score sent directly to the Lucas Graduate School of Business.

Step 4:

  • Thoroughly review the items listed on your “To Do” list on your MySJSU account and take note of the deadline date specified for each document.

  • All the documents listed must be official copies and submitted to GAPE by the specified deadline.

  • If you have completed a degree at an institution that is outside of the U.S., please visit International Document Requirements and find the country where the institution is located. Applicants must follow the instructions listed for the particular country of study. Otherwise the documents will be considered as unofficial.

  • An English-language proficiency exam is required for all students who graduated from a higher education institution in a country in which the primary language is not English. The exams accepted by this university include the Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL), the International English Language Testing System (IELTS), and the Pearson Test of English (PTE). The university minimum entrance score for the TOEFL is 213 (computer based), or 80 (internet based). The minimum score required on the IELTS is 7.0 and the PTE is 68.

Step 5:

The required items needed for the Lucas School MSA Program Admission Review are:

  • Statement of Purpose – Please address why you are pursuing the MS Tax degree. Limit your responses to two pages double-spaced

  • A GMAT score report

  • Your Resume

  • Verification of prerequisite course enrollment and/or completion if it is not already indicated on your educational documents.

  •  Two letters of reference are required from either faculty members and/or employers.  The MSA program does not have a standard recommendation form. We ask that each recommender submit their letter on either University or Company letterhead.  The recommendation letter should contain information about you that that the Admissions Committee would not otherwise know by reviewing the basic University application. The recommender’s insights could include information about your ability to succeed in a rigorous program such as this, your leadership ability, and possibly a character trait that would benefit you while attending the program. Citing examples that demonstrate the above would be helpful.
