Application Information for International Applicants - MBA

International applicants are defined as individuals who hold F-1 or J-1 Visas.

General Procedures

These procedures are for international applicants for the MBA programs.

Step 1

Complete the international application online at CSUMentor:

  • Indicate Application Term – Fall, Spring
  • For Education completed enter Seeking master’s degree or higher
  • For intended major select:
    • MBA-One Year for the full time accelerated MBA-One program  (Fall only)
    • MBA On-Campus for the Conventional MBA (Fall only)
    • MBA Off-Campus for the Executive-Style MBA (Fall or Spring only)
  • Leave the concentration option blank. All the Lucas MBA programs are generalist in nature and concentrations are not offered.
  • Leave the Alternative major section blank.
  • For Degree Objective select other master’s (MBA, MFA. MPA, etc.)
  • Be sure to enter a full street address (P.O. Boxes are not accepted) and a valid email address.
  • If you have taken the GMAT pr GRE, please enter your score. If you have not taken the GMAT or GRE yet please enter a date in order to be able to move forward in the application.
  • Omit the Statement of Purpose section on the application and follow the guidelines on Step 5 number 2 on the Lucas Required Items section.
  • Once you have completed your application, you must pay a non-refundable application fee of $55.00 either online via credit/debit card, or mail a check or money order to Graduate Admissions and Programs Evaluations (GAPE). If you are mailing a check or money order, be sure to include a copy of the "Application Agreement Statement" with your payment.

Step 2

Submit a completed Declaration of Finance form and copy of your current passport. Instructions per the Graduate Admissions and Programs Evaluation (GAPE) website:

In addition to the online application all international applicants MUST submit a Declaration of Finance. Your application will be delayed if GAPE does not receive this completed form. Below is a brief description of what is required on this form.

Federal immigration regulations require that all international students provide evidence of adequate funds to meet the financial obligations of enrollment at a U.S. university. The combined U.S. dollar amount from you or your sponsor(s) must equal or exceed the minimum listed for the applied term. Previous applicants must submit a new declaration of finance with a new bank statement attached if the previous application was older than one year. Here are the types of funds that are accepted and how they should be declared.

Funds from government or private agencies - Student must attach verification letter on letterhead from government or agency stating amount that will be received.

Funds from individual sponsor or self-sponsor - Sponsor must sign declaration of finance or provide signed letter declaring intent to sponsor.

If student has own funds, the declaration of finance must be signed by the student. Bank verification (example: a copy of bank statement) of all funds must be provided and dated within the current year.

A copy of your current passport will also be required. The name listed on your passport will be the same name that will be used on your I-20 if you are offered admission. There will be no exceptions to this rule.

Federal/State financial aid is not available to international students. Visit the University’s financial aid page to see other types of aid that are available.

Step 3

If you have not already done so, take the GMAT or GRE exam and have the score sent directly to the Lucas Graduate School of Business.  

Step 4

Thoroughly review the items listed on your “To Do” list on your MySJSU account and take note of the deadline date specified for each document.

All the documents listed must be official copies and submitted to GAPE by the specified deadline.

If you have completed a degree at an institution that is outside of the U.S., please visit the International Document Requirements page and find the country where the institution is located. Applicants must follow the instructions listed for the particular country of study. Otherwise the documents will be considered as unofficial.

An English-language proficiency exam is required for all students who graduated from a higher education institution in a country in which the primary language is not English. The exams accepted by this university include the Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL), the International English Language Testing System (IELTS), and the Pearson Test of English (PTE). The university minimum entrance score for the TOEFL is 213 (computer based), or 80 (internet based). The minimum score required on the IELTS is 7.0 and the PTE is 68.

Step 5

Lucas School Required Items for MBA Program Admission Review

  1. Statement of Purpose - Please address the following questions in the body of your essay. Limit your responses to two pages double spaced.
    • What are your motivations for pursuing the Lucas GSB University MBA?
    • What are your short term (2-5 years) and long term (>5 years) career goals and how will the Lucas GSB MBA assist in helping you achieve these goals?
    • How have your previous academic, work experience, and/or extracurricular experiences and accomplishments prepared you for the rigorous academic study of the Lucas MBA?
  2. A GMAT score report
  3. A Resume
  4. Letters of recommendation are optional but highly recommended.  If you wish to submit recommendations, they may be sent from individuals (current or former employers, supervisors, professors) who are able to objectively assess the quality of your character and your capabilities and accomplishments. Letters of recommendation should include the provider's relationship to the applicant, their complete address and contact information (if not printed on the letterhead), and discuss the applicant's level of maturity, motivation, intellectual ability.

The San José State University Graduate Admissions Review Process

While the Lucas Graduate School of Business office makes the final admissions decision for our business graduate programs, the overall admissions process for all SJSU graduate programs is managed by the SJSU Graduate Admissions and Program Evaluations.

When all of your required documents on your “To Do List” are received and your status is listed as complete on your MySJSU student account, your application will undergo the initial review by the GAPE office. An evaluator will be assigned to evaluate your grade point average (GPA), your degree, and English Language Proficiency examination scores if required. When this process is completed, the application will be referred to the Lucas Graduate School of Business for the final review and an admissions decision.
