Calculus Placement Exam Dates

Calculus Placement Exams (CPE)
CPE is given for:

Math 30 - Calculus I
-
Math 30P – Calculus I with precalculus

Math 60 – Calculus for Biological Sciences
-
Math 71 – Calculus for Business & Aviation
Do I need to take the CPE?
Nearly all students who wish to enroll in Math 30, Math 30P, Math 60, or Math 71 are required to take the CPE. If you have met the prerequisites for the course that you are interested in, then you will not be required to take the exam.
Does the CPE exempt students from the Entry Level Math (ELM) exam?
No, the CPE does not exempt students from ELM exam. Students can take Math 8 College Algebra, Math 10 Math for General Education or Math 19 Precalculus without taking the CPE as long as they satisfy the ELM requirement.
What material is covered in the CPE for Math 30, 30P & 60?
Students are required to take part one which covers College Algebra, and part two (Calculus Readiness Exam) which covers College Algebra, Trigonometry, and Properties of Elementary Functions. Students will be required to start in Math 19 Precalculus if they do not pass.
What material is covered in the CPE for Math 71?
Students are required to take the first part of the CPE exam, which covers College Algebra, and if they do not pass the exam they will be required to start in Math 8 College Algebra.
Are practice exams available to students?
Yes! Click on “Practice Exam for CPE”.
How do students register?
Students can register online by clicking on “Sign up for the exam”. Students can also submit a registration form to the Math Department via mail or in person. The registration form can be found on the Calculus page. Registration MUST be made PRIOR to the day of the exam.
What method of payment do you accept?
The $20 payment can be made in the form of cash or check. Checks should be made payable to San Jose State University (SJSU). Payment can be made in person, mailed or on the day of the exam.
