Calculus Placement Exam Information
The Calculus Placement Exam is for students who want to take Math 30, 30P, 30PL and Math 71 and do not already meet the prerequisites. Students who already meet the prerequisites or who want to enroll in Precalculus or College Algebra do not need to take the placement exam - visit the Math Placement and Prerequisites page for more information. Students who do not already meet the prerequisites will not be able to enroll in their Calculus I class until they have taken the placement exam.
Calculus Placement Exams are offered after the last day of a term through the Add Deadline of the following term.
Admitted and Incoming Frosh students can take the CPE on Admitted Spartan Day or on the morning of the Orientation.
General Testing Dates
General Testing Dates are open to all SJSU students (incoming frosh and transfer students as well as current SJSU students).
They will be scheduled in June. Please check back then for available dates and times.
How do I register?
You can register online through CashNet. Registration information and the CashNet link can be found on the CPE Registration Form page. Registration confirmations/admission tickets are emailed within 1-5 business days.
Note: Online registration ends at 3:00 pm the day before the exam or when all the exam spots have been filled, whichever occurs first. Walk-ins may permitted depending on availabe space.
How can I prepare for the test?
An explanation of the material covered on each part of the test and a link to a practice exam can be found on the Preparation for the CPE page.
What do I need to bring with me?
On the day of the exam you will need to bring your printed confirmation email (electronic versions will not be accepted), photo ID (SJSU Student ID preferred), and pencils and/or pens.
No calculators are allowed on the test.
Should I bring my calculator?
When do I get my scores?
An email is sent out within 1-2 business days of the test to let you know which class you place into. As soon as you get that email, you will be able to enroll in that class. If you have any issues enrolling, check out the Calculus Enrollment page.
CPE for Incoming Frosh Students
Incoming Frosh students are able to take the Calculus Placement Exam on any of the General Testing dates. They also have the option to take the placement exam on the morning of their first day of orientation. To sign up to take the exam on the first day of orientation, fill out the registration form, indicate that you are an incoming frosh student, and select your orientation date.
It is strongly recommended that incoming frost students take their placement exam either before their orientation or on the first day of orientation so that they will be able to register for the appropriate math classes during their orientation.
Calculus Placement Exams during orientation are on the first day from 7:30-9:30 am. You will not miss any orientation activities.
