Teaching Associates (TA's)
The department hires graduate students as Teaching Associates every semester. Though applications are accepted at any time, if possible, it is best to apply for a TA position during the first month of the semester before you would like to start teaching. To be considered for a TA position, you must be admitted as a classified graduate student in the Mathematics department. Fill out the application form and submit it along with 3 letters of recommendation to the department office.
To be eligible, graduate students shall be enrolled, and in "classified status" in a graduate program of study, for a minimum of three units of coursework per semester. For one semester only, students who have already served as a TA who are enrolled in fewer than three units are also eligible for employment. If fewer than three units, a student should be enrolled in a least one unit or be in the process of completing a Satisfactory Progress (SP) grade. Appointment as a TA shall be limited to a total of 4 semesters.
Matriculated graduate students who are appointed as Teaching Associates at San Jose State University shall be granted fee waivers, during the semester that they are teaching, of mandatory campus miscellaneous fees and the mandatory state university fees.
- If a TA has a fractional hiring time of 0.1 to 0.2, s/he will be entitled to a fee waiver covering 1.0 to 6.0 units per semester they are teaching.
- If a TA has a fractional hiring time of above 0.2, s/he will be entitled to a fee waiver covering 6.1 or more units per semester they are teaching.
During the academic year the department hires graders, lab monitors, office assistants, tutors and workshop facilitators based on the current budget allocation. We look to employ responsible, courteous students who have a minimum GPA of 3.0. Students interested in grading or tutoring must have earned a grade of B or better in the course they would like to be assigned. To apply for one of these positions prospective students should download the Student Employment Application (PDF) or the Application for Workshop Facilitator (PDF) and turn it in to the Math Office (MH 308) the semester before they would like to work.
Off Campus Tutoring
The math office keeps a list of individuals available for private tutoring. This is merely a convenience we provide for private tutoring inquiries. The math department does not endorse the tutors on this list. If you are interested in having your name added to the list of private tutors you should come to the Math Office located in MacQuarrie Hall Room 308.
Tutors are also hired every semester at the Learning Assistance Resource Center (LARC).
