The Department of Mathematics and Statistics at San José State University invites
applications for four full time tenure-track faculty positions in mathematics (pure
and applied) at the rank of Assistant Professor. Candidates must have a doctoral degree
in the mathematical sciences or a closely related field by July 2015. We seek applicants
with demonstrated evidence of excellence in teaching at the university level, outstanding
research potential, and a commitment to department service. We are especially interested
in candidates with expertise in analysis/PDEs, geometry/topology, discrete math/combinatorics,
numerical analysis, optimization/operations research, and mathematical biology. Strong
candidates in other areas of mathematics will also be considered.
Applicants should have awareness of and sensitivity to the educational goals of a multicultural population as might have been gained in cross-cultural study, training, teaching, and other comparable experience.
In addition to teaching a variety of undergraduate and graduate courses in the Department
of Mathematics and Statistics, the faculty member is expected to supervise graduate
students, to maintain a program of scholarly activity, to work on curriculum development,
and to be involved in departmental governance. Faculty in applied mathematics are
also expected to supervise student teams working on industry-sponsored research projects
run by the department's Center for Applied Mathematics, Computation and Statistics
Candidate must address the needs of a student population of great diversity – in age, cultural background, ethnicity, primary language, and academic preparation – through course materials, teaching strategies, and advisement.
