Heat Exchanger Research
Dr. Okamoto receives grant from the CA Energy Commission
Dr. Nicole Okamoto (SJSU) and Dr. Andrew Sommers (Miami University) have received a grant entitled, "Using Patterned Surface Wettability for Improved Frosting/Defrosting Performance" from the California Energy Commission Energy Innovations Small Grant Program. The purpose of this grant is to develop new types of heat exchanger surfaces to reduce the effect of frost on air conditioners and refrigerators. Frost build-up causes a significant drop in heat exchanger efficiency. Dr. Okamoto is working with a team of six senior design students and one master's student to design and build a testing apparatus and test the samples developed by Dr. Sommers at Miami University.
