Prof. John Lee Develops Novel Display Technology

Since 2012 John Lee has been collaborating with startup company Zikon, Inc. (Sunnyvale, CA) in research and development of 'electronic paper' using their proprietary electrophoretic nanodroplet ink. Compared to conventional displays, this e-paper technology consumes much less power and is more environmentally friendly.  The reflective mode of the display means that image contrast is inherently superior to conventional emissive displays (e.g. LED) even in bright daylight. The display can be made on flexible substrates, with low-cost manufacturing processes such as spray deposition and screen printing.  The team has received $650,000 in funding from the National Science Foundation under the Small Business Innovation Research (SBIR) program, with $138,000 in subwards to SJSU.  Lee and his students have been studying electric field and fluid interactions, performing materials characterization, and developing manufacturing processes.
