The Middle East Studies Progam is committed to helping students gain a better knowledge and understanding of the peoples, cultures, religions, and conflicts of this strategic part of the world, from antiquity to the present. In addition, study of the region is critical to the understanding of U.S. foreign policy and global political economy.

The program provides a forum for dialogue on contemporary and historical issues of concern to the peoples and cultures of the Middle East and provides a background for students whose professional goals include work in the region, and the promotion of mutual understanding, tolerance, and peace. The minor is especially recommended to students seeking a career in international law, business, economic development, health care, education and/or religious studies.

Courses in Middle East Studies encompass the disciplines of art history, anthropology, business, foreign languages, history, humanities, political science, sociology, and religious studies. All students are encouraged to seek both an interdisciplinary and a multicultural understanding of the region.
