Tech center planned for Ames

San Jose State University plans to establish what it calls the Metropolitan Technology Center (MTC) at NASA Research Park near Mountain View. Formal signing of an agreement between the university and NASA Ames Research Center, which is developing the research park, is scheduled for Thursday.

The purpose of the technology center is to foster research collaborations between NASA Ames and the California State University system, including its campuses, organized research units, and affiliates, NASA says. Collaborations may include participation by SJSU graduate students in NASA research and the formation of joint university-NASA research teams.

"NASA and SJSU already enjoy a long and successful history together with over 25 years of collaboration. These [new] programs will provide educational opportunities, workforce development, and research opportunities to help Silicon Valley continue to achieve and grow," says Robert Caret, university president, in a statement. "With San Jose State University acting as our lead institution, all campuses within the CSU can play a role in the development of the Metropolitan Technology Center," adds California State University Chancellor Charles Reed. Officials envision the center developing programs in information science and technology; biotechnology; sensors and wireless networking communication as well as a center for human factors research and applications and a center for multimedia portals to information among other uses.
The NASA Ames Research Park is being developed on land at Moffett Field.
