NASA, SJSU to Work Together

BY JOSHUA L. KWAN
NASA/Ames Research Center at Moffett Field will announce a partnership today with San Jose State University to build the Metropolitan Technology Center, a place for research collaboration in biotechnology, communications, business and the teaching of science.

The technology center is part of Ames' ambitious plan to convert 213 acres of prime Mountain View real estate into the NASA Research Park, a hub that will house local university, industry and government scientists.

"The more you can have people physically together, talking about ideas, the more opportunities occur for radical improvement in technology and science," Michael Marlaire, Ames' assistant director for development, said Wednesday.

Ames Director Henry McDonald and San Jose State President Robert Caret will sign an agreement at Moffett Field that outlines the broad possibilities of the new relationship. "Our goal is to develop a world-class, shared-use R&D campus by partnering with industry, academia and non-profits in the NASA Research Park," McDonald said in a statement. San Jose State plans to build 200,000 square feet of lab space.

NASA has roped off 40 acres in its planned 213-acre Research Park for schools to construct laboratories in which professors and students will work alongside NASA scientists. Other universities that plan to participate include the UC-Santa Cruz and Carnegie Mellon.

Last week, NASA unveiled the Carl Sagan Center for the Study of Life in the Cosmos, which will serve as the centerpiece of the new Research Park. The new efforts are in response to the dwindling military presence at Moffett Field and NASA's overall push to collaborate with non-governmental institutions.
