Space Technology Center

As NASA initiated concepts and plans to develop the Moffett Field property transferred to NASA in 1994; research and technology centers, with participation of Government, Industry and Academia, became a key planning element. It was envisioned that several of these centers would be created and produce research and technology results that would be beneficial for all participants.

The Space Technology Center (STC) is one of the first centers to become a reality. A Space Act Agreement between NASA and San Jose State University formalized the establishment of the Center this past April. Since then, Stanford, Santa Clara and Utah State University have become part of the STC.

The following broad goals have been established for the STC:

  • Educate students and working professionals
  • Provide opportunities for inexperienced universities to participate in space missions
  • Serve as a resource center and test bed for new ideas
  • Develop technology for space missions
  • Evolve to providing platforms for NASA science missions

Currently there are several activities underway and plans are being developed for additional work:

  • Stanford is teaching their well-known graduate engineering course series, Spacecraft Design. A laboratory for build-up of the small satellites that are integral to the student’s work has been set up in the STC facility. Additional classes and seminars will be offered through Stanford’s Center for Professional Development.
  • Santa Clara is developing concepts for a small satellite mission control center in the STC.
  • SJSU, Utah State University, and the Aerospace Corp. are working with all the STC partners in the development of a concurrent engineering design center with remote user capability. This design center will be known as the Integrated Design Network.
