SJSU Colleges of Social Science and Science Partners with NASA Earth Science Division
$2,605,525 Awarded over Three Years
SJSU’s Geography Department within the College of Social Science and Physics Department within the College of Science were recently awarded Cooperative Agreements from NASA’s Earth Science Division to collaborate with NASA research scientists on a wide variety of research and education topics in earth system science, technology, and applications. As part of the Metropolitan Technology Center’s effort to create broad linkages between NASA divisions and SJSU colleges or departments, discussions between our two organizations began almost a year ago. The SJSU Foundation played a critical role in moving the cooperative forward by providing a well-respected and flexible partner that worked diligently to finalize the agreement.
As part of the partnership, five NASA-based scientists were named as adjunct faculty within the Department of Geography. Dr. Friedmann Freund, already an adjunct faculty with the department of Physics, will continue to serve as a lead with NASA for the department’s work under this project.
The collaborative projects place particular emphasis on local, regional, and global environmental problems resulting from changing climatic and land-use patterns. The research looks at the particular technological tools and methods in which NASA specializes including remote sensing, image processing, computer simulation and analysis, geographical information systems, and high bandwidth telecommunications.
