The Collaborative for Higher Education Continue to Grow
Funded programs train teachers and expose students to careers in science and engineering
The Collaborative for Higher Education is a partnership of the three public higher education systems lead by San Jose State University, UC Santa Cruz and the Foothill-De Anza Community College District. Formed in the summer of 2000 by President Robert Caret, Dr. M.R.C. Greenwood and Dr. Leo Chavez, the Collaborative creates a model of higher education working together with a seamless delivery of educational services in science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM). The NASA Research Park is an important partner with the Collaborative and will ultimately provide the physical space for a joint Collaborative Building.
Examples of Collaborative funded projects currently underway include:
- Developing Effective Engineering Pathways (DEEP). The Collaborative recently received a five-year, $2 million grant from the National Science Foundation to increase the number of students entering the engineering profession.
- Teacher Institute. In January the Collaborative received a two-year $402,000 private foundation grant to establish the Collaborative Teacher Institute to provide professional development in science and math for grades 3 through 5 teachers.
- High School STEM Enrichment. The High School STEM Enrichment project attracts qualified underrepresented youth from Silicon Valley into careers in engineering and science. Funded by the California Academic Partnership Program for $323,000, the project features curriculum enrichment, NASA summer internships, and the development of a high-school course in engineering.
- Validation of NASA Education Products. With funding from NASA Ames Research Center, the Collaborative is beginning a project to evaluate NASA science and technology education products that have been developed for teachers to use in the classroom.
