The Center for Humanity and Space
The Center for Humanity and Space (CHS) is a new program developed by NASA Ames in partnership with MTC. CHS will serve as a national collaborative center for the study, development and communications of space-related activities of benefit to humanity. A multi-disciplinary program, CHS will work with SJSU’s College of Social Sciences and will call upon the expertise of faculty in psychology, economics, and sociology. The lead NASA scientist and CHS Principal Investigator, Kathleen Connell, has been appointed as an adjunct faculty within the Department of Psychology. Proposals for about $450,000 for year one CHS support are currently pending from NASA with a start date of February 2004.
CHS proposes to be a focus for the development and nurturance of an extraordinary new human-centric space science discipline. Year one activities will focus on the feasibility and early implementation for the Center, including assessing the following: the macro-environment trends, other activities and participants in the humanity and space arena, potential customer and partners, core activities of a CHS, and strategic planning and timeline issues. In addition, peer input, feedback and support will be sought via a road-mapping workshop with NASA officials, policy makers, academic experts and industry leaders.
