Mentor
"a person looked upon for wise advice and guidance"
- Webster's Dictionary
As a first year student at San José State University, you will find that there are many people available to assist you. The university and department orientations provide information on getting around campus, finding and using campus resources, and creating your class schedules. You can also receive more personalized assistance by having a mentor.
SJSU is committed to the development and retention of its students, and its mentor programs are designed to achieve these goals. In addition, first year students in the MUSE program will have access to a Student Mentor as well as their MUSE professor.
These individuals are trained undergraduates who help first year students to succeed at SJSU. Mentors serve as role models, will help with a variety of workshops, and some will work in the MUSE classroom by facilitating discussions on academic coping skills (such as how to approach assignments and use technology) and other student concerns (such as parking, finding resources on campus and making friends).
