A letter from the coordinator of the sjsu young musicians' project

Marylin Giusti, Director of SJSU Young Musicians ProjectDear Teachers and Students:

I have the distinct pleasure to announce the inauguration of the SJSU Young Musicians' Project (SJSU YMP), a School of Music and Dance effort to provide youth with access to private music lessons as well as an opportunities to engage their community. This year, the SJSU YMP will be accepting requests for private lessons in ALL instruments to players ages 8-18.

The SJSU Young Musicians' Project offers a limited amount of full and partial scholarships. Scholarship students will not only receive individual instruction on their instrument, but they will also serve a minimum of one hour of service to their community (the SJSU YMP, school orchestra room, neighborhood, church, etc) each week. The goal of this program is to heighten students’ sense of civic responsibility while rewarding their efforts with an opportunity for self-expression through music.

Furthermore, all students will play a leading role in deciding the future of the SJSU YMP. Students will meet as a group to organize fundraising events to benefit future scholarships. At the end of each semester, students will organize and perform in a benefit recital where all proceeds will fund student scholarships.

To participate, students merely need to complete the application. Keep an eye out on this page for details regarding application deadlines. Within this application is a Scholarship Form which MUST be completed in order to be considered for full or partial scholarship. Recipients of this scholarship will receive a years’ supply of free or reduced-priced, one-hour private lessons.

We recommend that parents and/or legal guardians fill out the application with their child. Applications may either be scanned and emailed to youngmusiciansproject@sjsu.edu or mailed to:
