Keeping the Spartan Spirit

When not on the field, the Marching Band cheer the Spartans on as Pep Band, playing crowd favorites such as "Mortal Combat," "Conan," and the SJSU Fight Song.

Dancers on Stage

The Spartan Spectrum Dancers perform a feature for every halftime show, dancing to the Band's rendition of popular songs such as Katy Perry's "California Girls" and Lady Gaga's "The Edge of Glory."

The Pre-game Show

Before the Spartan Football Team takes the field, the Spartan Marching Band ignites school spirit with a pre-game show, led by drum major Johnathan Hsu.

The Spartan Drumline

If the drum major is the head of the band, then the percussion section is the spine. Accompanied musically by the pit, the battery marches down the field during the pre-game show, keeping time with rigid precision.

Leading the Charge

Members of the Spartan Marching Band demonstrate the ultimate school spirit by dedicating themselves to performing a total of four to five different shows per season, learning each show in a matter of two to three weeks.

The Spartan Color Guard

Dynamic visual representation of the Band's musical performance is provided by the Color Guard, a team of coordinated dancers donned with professional costumes and equipment selected to best enhance each show's theme.

It's Up to the Saxophones

With no flutes or clarinets, the Band relies on the saxophone section for the fulfilling woodwind timbre. Incoming flute and clarinet players are encouraged to try their hand at other instruments within the Band.

Musicians Always Wanted

The Spartan Marching Band's drive for excellence certainly doesn't discourage membership for all majors: members of the Band include students from all disciplines. Students from other colleges are invited to participate through Open University.

Trombone Solo

Trombone player Sam Brown takes his turn at the center of the formation for a resounding trombone solo.

Trumpets

The Spartan Marching Band would not be complete without an elite trumpet section at the top of the music pyramid. Most halftime shows feature a trumpet solo.

"The Pride of the Spartans"

The Spartan Marching Band, under the direction of Scott Pierson, takes the field in Spartan Stadium each fall semester, creating an electrifying atmosphere for the thousands of fans engaged by our thrilling performances.  Our unique combination of brass instruments, saxophones, and percussion creates a driving sound that is one of a kind. With the addition of the dazzling Color Guard, and the fabulous Spectrum Dancers, the band also has a visual style uniquely its own.

The members of the Spartan Marching Band are students from every field of study on campus, from first year undergraduate through graduate students, including several “open university” members. They rehearse eight hours per week, preparing new music and maneuvers, and receive up to two units of academic credit. At each home game, the Spartan Marching Band performs a completely new halftime show, plus a pre-game show and a post-game concert. A source of Spartan Stadium spirit, the band reflects all the color and fanfare of major university sports pageantry.

Spartan Color Guard

Students wishing to audition for the Spartan Color Guard need to come to the first several days of rehearsal each August. This is when the auditions will take place, and the membership will be set fairly quickly. Students should have some prior color guard experience, usually coming from high school band, drum & bugle corps or winter guard membership. Students chosen become members of the Spartan Marching Band class and receive two units of credit.

Spartan Spectrum Dance Team

Spartan Spectrum Dance team auditions are held each spring to determine membership for the following fall semester. Most dancers that audition have had many years of dance studio experience in a variety of dance styles. High school seniors are welcome to audition. Students who are chosen will become members of the Spartan Marching Band class and receive two units of credit. For information about the audition date, call band director Scott Pierson at (408) 924-4643.
