San Jose State University School of Music & Dance is proud to announce the appointment of Dr. Craig McKenzie as the new Director of Athletic Bands and Assistant Director of Bands. Dr. McKenzie is the current Visiting Scholar and acting Assistant Director of Bands / Director of Athletic Bands at San José State University. His responsibilities at SJSU have been, and will continue to, include directing the Spartan Marching Band and Spartan Basketball Band, working with the Symphonic Band, teaching within the Music Education department, and supervising student teachers.
Dr. McKenzie received his D.M.A. from the University of Miami, Frost School of Music where he studied instrumental conducting with Robert M. Carnochan. He holds a Bachelor of Music Education from the University of Colorado at Boulder and a Master of Music with an emphasis in conducting from San José State University. During his time at San José State as a student, Dr. McKenzie also taught conducting classes and directed the Symphonic Band.
With seventeen years of middle school, high school, and college teaching experience, Dr. McKenzie previously taught at Abraham Lincoln High School, a visual and performing arts school in San José, CA and before that at Pioneer High School in Whittier, CA. He enjoys returning to the San Bernardino mountains of California each summer to visit Arrowbear Music Camp where he has directed the Intermediate Session Band every year since 2002. He credits Arrowbear Music Camp with an influential portion of his musical education and attended as a camper in his childhood.
When not on the podium, Craig resides in San José, CA with his wife Andrea and their dog Freya. He enjoys traveling, exploring new cities via their restaurants, and searching for lost retro, vintage, and Polynesian Pop artwork to add to his collection.
Dr. McKenzie believes that music and the arts are an integral part of a well-rounded education and that training the next generation of music teachers is of paramount importance.

Directed by Dr. David Vickerman, the Wind Ensemble is comprised of the finest woodwind, brass, and percussion students in the School of Music and Dance. Dr. Vickerman consistently seeks to expose his students and audiences to the highest quality of music written for wind instruments, ranging from Renaissance masters to the most recent prizewinning composers. Through the rehearsal and performance of a diverse repertoire, students are exposed to a wide variety of compositional techniques, rehearsal processes and expressive possibilities. The Wind Ensemble programs are performed in both the fall and spring semesters. In addition to four on-campus concerts, the Wind Ensemble regularly tours throughout California and the Western states, and has regularly performed at the California Music Educators State Conference and at the College Band Directors National Conference.
Music Majors focusing on classical performance must participate in either Wind Ensemble or Symphonic Band as a major ensemble. Auditions are held at the beginning of each semester and are open to all majors (see below). Students will sight-read and perform a prepared piece. Their performance level will determine their chair placement and whether they participate in Wind Ensemble or Symphonic Band. Instruments are available to students who pay the $30 use fee each semester. Scholarship awards are based upon performance level and the needs of the School. There is no additional cost to the student for local and regional band travel and tours.
Dr. Edward Harris, Director of the Wind Ensemble from 2000-2017, retired June 1, 2017.
The Symphonic Band performs a wide variety of literature, including the masterworks for band, and contemporary wind literature. Under the direction of Dr. David Vickerman and Craig McKenzie, the philosophy of the Symphonic Band is to encourage musical growth in all students through careful selection of appropriate repertoire. Symphonic Band is open to both music and non-music majors, and performs twice each semester.
