Concert Choir


The Concert Choir is comprised of the finest singers at San José State University. Membership in the ensemble is open to both undergraduate and graduate students of all majors by audition. Under the direction of Dr. Jeffrey Benson, the choir is guided by a philosophy that seeks to expose its students and its audiences to the highest quality of music written for choir, from Renaissance masters to composers of the twenty-first century. The Concert Choir gives performances both within SJSU and throughout the state and national choral community.

Music Majors concentrating in voice must participate in Concert Choir as a major ensemble. Auditions are typically held the week before classes begin each semester. CLICK HERE TO AUDITION. Please contact Dr. Benson or stop by MUS 262 (Choral Office) for more information.

Choraliers


The Choraliers is a smaller, advanced chamber ensemble comprised of undergraduate and graduate students. Membership is open to all SJSU students through audition. The choir performs a wide variety of repertoire at the highest level of the choral art. This ensemble allows students to learn the refined techniques of small group singing. The Choraliers perform nationally and internationally as well as within California and the SJSU community.

Choraliers is a major ensemble. Auditions are typically held the week before classes begin each semester.  Please contact Dr. Benson or stop by MUS 262 (Choral Office) for more information.

Spartan Glee Club


Spartan Glee Club is a non-auditioned ensemble comprised of undergraduate and graduate students. Membership is open to all SJSU students, regardless of major. The choir performs a wide variety of music and allows students to learn and perform an array of repertoire written for lower voices (tenor and bass).

Treble Choir


The Treble Choir is a non-auditioned ensemble comprised of undergraduate and graduate students. Membership is open to all SJSU students, regardless of major. The choir performs a wide variety of music and allows students to learn and perform an array of repertoire written for treble voices.

Vocal Jazz Ensemble


The Vocal Jazz Ensemble is an auditioned jazz choir comprised of undergraduate and graduate students. Membership is open to all SJSU students, regardless of major.

Opera Theater


Directed by Professor Layna Chianakas, the Opera Theater program provides training in performance and interpretation techniques, stage movement, and other related subjects necessary for a career in performance or teaching. A major scenes program is performed at the end of each semester and is accompanied by piano. Fully staged operas with orchestra are performed every other year.

Contact Professor Chianakas for audition information. Those students accepted into Opera Theater must register for both MUS 152 and and MUS 161.
